VSP 7024 upgrade path and version advice
« on: April 13, 2016, 06:52:30 AM »
Hello,

I have 3 VSP7024 switches running with ISIS SPBM and a fiber ring between my 3 datacentres. This is all working very nice.

Current version:
sysDescr: Virtual Services Platform 7024XLS
HW:06 FW:10.3.1.4 SW:v10.3.1.005
Mfg Date:20140120 HW Dev:none

Now I want to upgrade, and I know that I will have to take down a datacentre, upgrade the switch on that location and then bring the datacentre back online. I have a few questions though:

- What version should I go to? I saw that a version 10.4 is available? Is this version stable?
- I hear rumors on a version 10.4.1 that should be around the corner? Anyone?
- Does my ISIS SPBM cloud still work after I upgraded one switch to 10.4?
- If I upgrade a switch, from 10.3.1.005 to 10.4, can I do this in one reboot? Or do I need some in between versions?
- How long is the reboot window?
- I can't locate the upgrade instructions for the VSP7000 switches, I would think that it is roughly the same as a ERS5500 upgrade, but I would like to check this before bricking my devices.

Thanks a lot,
Jan Hugo Prins

Hello, this is what I found in v10.4.0 Releasenotes:

Warnings and important notices
The following sections provides warning notices and important notices for the VSP 7000 Series.
Agent upgrade notice
Caution:
DATA LOSS CAN OCCUR Do not upgrade directly from Release 10.0 to Release 10.2 or later.
If the switch is running Release 10.0, you must upgrade to Release 10.1 before upgrading to
10.2 or later software. Upgrading from Release 10.0 to the current release can cause accidental
erasure of the agent image on the switch. If the primary agent image is erased, during the next
reboot the switch attempts to boot from the secondary agent image.

Good luck

As you can see in my mail, I'm already at version 10.3.1, so the issues with upgrading from 10.0 not relevant.
I'm more curious in experience with version 10.4 in combination with SPBM / IS-IS. And off course in the release notes for version 10.4.1 which is supposed to go GA somewhere soon (end of this month???)

I have been running 10.4.0 on my VSP 7024s and they have been fine in pure SPB mode. I have experienced some bugs running SPB and SMLT on the VSP 7024. I also have been informed that 10.4.1 should be out mid April. So if you can wait I would wait until 10.4.1 is released.

I would just out of principal be weary of using anything that ends in a .0 release.  Using those initial code releases is for the brave who don't mind dying on the bleeding edge of technology so the rest of us can live when the bug-fix releases come out a few months later.

I fully agree on this with you. That is why I'm currently waiting for the 10.4.1 release that should arrive very soon.
I haven't seen it yet though.

Yup.  Just got the notification this morning.  Looks like a much needed upgrade to fix some nasty issues.
