VRRP in Avaya 5530
« on: February 11, 2014, 06:27:58 AM »
Hello guys
in the below config . i am using two 5530  ers as a core in my company and a smlt  i tryed use 5530 and 425 at edge smlt, ist and vrrp is running fine but after 600 pings from a  notebook in the same network, the virtual IP doesn't  answer. To fix this I need to disconnect a cable of one interface vrrp in SW 1 OR SW2 of the cluster and after almost 500 pings stops againg.

Both switches of the cluster are with advanced license and software 6.3.3
What i did wrong or what i forgot to configure?

thanks

Does anything show up in the switch logs during that time period?  Do the switch interface IP's (.2 and .3 ) still respond even if the .1 doesn't?

Thanks for your help Telair

 i haven't checked the logs  ???. And the both interface (.2 and .3) besides interface .1 doesn't respond :-X

if disconnect a cable of one interface vrrp in SW 1 OR SW2 or any interface IST.  The ping came back respond...

i don't know.. but could be something with the arp table? or any configuration in port interface? for limit the quantity of pings?

thank you

Hi,

I see that your IST peer-ip is your local vlan ip address, is it true or an little copy error ?
then,
Is there any other network access on your laptop ? (Wifi ?) if yes, deactivate it and make your test again.
Is there any load on your network ? ICMP protocol is low priority.
What is the configuration of your smlt port ? autonegotiate or forced ?

regards,

HI Théo
the ip of IST peer-ip is different of my vlan ip address

like this:

sw 1
# interface vlan 5
5530-1(config-if)# ip address 10.10.5.2 255.255.255.0
ist enable peer-ip 10.1.2.1 vlan 1000

sw 2
# ist enable peer-ip 10.1.2.2 vlan 1000

there isn't other network, i too tryed test with another workstation
 and the error happened again

the network is in test just with these SW... so there isn't  other traffic of network.

the configuration of smlt is default, in autonegotiate.

could be another thing?

 thanks  for your help

You'll need to-do some active troubleshooting to figure out what's happening...

The first question... are you sure you are not putting a loop into your network?

When you ping to the .1 interface times out from the client device, does it the client device still have an ARP entry the .1 interface?

If you connect to the switch console port can you ping the client device. Can each switch ping the other? What's the status of the VRRP interface on each switch during the problem. I would not recommend you enable "fast-adv" that can quickly overload a switch if you have too many VRRP instances.

Good Luck!

hello Michael

thanks for your help

so we've bad and good news after the troubleshooting that you recommended rsrsrsrs

answers for your questions:

i think that network isn't in loop , just has 6 cables connected rightly

about arp, i checked and during the problem, the client device doesn't have an ARP entry anymore,
the ARP type before was dynamic and after the problem, type was invalid

i tryed to add to arp table the virtual IP 10.10.5.1  manually with type static... and worked perfectly..... i stopped ping manually with 7000 pings.

and i tested with two notebooks

But in the future the network will have about 600 devices and 12 instance of VRRP and isn't solution modify ARP in all devices

about ping with the console port didn't work and could not ping switch to other

the status of vrrp during the problem is normal

5530-2(config)#show ip vrrp inter
VLAN VR   Virtual                      Admin  Primary          Master
ID   ID   IP Address       State       State  IP Address       IP Address
---- ---  ---------------  ----------  -----  ---------------  ---------------
5    5    10.10.5.1        Backup      Up     10.10.5.3        10.10.5.2
10   10   10.10.10.1       Backup      Up     10.10.10.3       10.10.10.2

I disabled the fast-adv after your recomendation

what could i do to solve this problem with ARP?

thank u!!! :D

This will either bug a bug (no likely in my experience with this software release) or a configuration issue (physical or logical).

You need to determine which of the two it is... you could try downgrading and see if the problem resolves itself.

Daniel, can you capture the running-config of the core switches for us and post? sh run
This would be better than the keystroke inputs in the initial post and replies.
Thanks

Guys i get solve the problem...

the ping works without bug.. and i get success to do the routing between vlans without probems too

to resolve, i disabled all trunking in the siwtch

now i'm not using MLT in uplink ports neither IST for the conection between the switches core..
and i don't need configure nothing in the edge switches

my question is..
theres any problem, like bad connection, lost of communication, slow if i let my structure without MLT/IST?
in my structure  will have ten interfaces VRRP

thanks

You have the IST peer IP addresses configured the wrong way round. The ist peer-ip needs to be the address of the remote switch.

SW1
interface vlan 1000
ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.252

interface mlt 1
ist peer-ip 10.1.2.1
ist vlan 1000

SW2
interface vlan 1000
ip address 10.1.2.2 255.255.255.252

interface mlt 1
ist peer-ip 10.1.2.2
ist vlan 1000
