SLPP on Server VLAN with VMWARE servers
« on: July 16, 2013, 07:56:25 AM »
Hi All,

I would like to know if anyone has implemented SLPP on a VLAN with VMWARE machines in it ??

We are implementing SLPP across the network on all VLANS and were wondering if this will have any adverse effects.

VLAN 1 is being used as Management VLAN and also for terminating some servers.

Regards,
Lalit

Hi Lalit,

I guess you connect your VM-Servers redundant to an IST-Cluster of ERS-4k/-5k/-8k with SLT/SMLT?
SLPP is only for protecting connections between network devices only.
So if an MLT on edge switch breaks, SLPP from connected IST-Cluster will detect that and will shut down one uplink.
SLPP should be enabled with different thresholds (my recommendation peer1 value=5 vs peer2 value=500) on SLT-ports only.

Hi MatzeKS,

Thank you for the response.

We have SLPP enabled on all other VLANS and interfaces however customer was a little wary when we insisted upon the same to be configured on all VLANS including VLAN 1 which hosts the VM servers.

we recently had an issue in the network where few MAC addresses were learn from multiple interfaces and VLANS and Avaya has provided this recommendation.

Anyways we will try this out on 27th July during a scheduled maintenance window and post that I will provide feedback on the result.

Thanks again for the reply.

Cheers.

Lalit

Lalit, as I already stated - SLPP should NOT be configured on uplinks to VM-Servers!
This only for protecting links from IST-Cluster to Edge-Switches and/or directly connected IST-Cluster.
For each vlan that you configure with SLPP a dedicated SLPPDU will be sent from IST-Peer1/2 to Edge-Device.
Mostly is sufficient to use only one vlan (Mgmt) that exists on all affected devices to detect a loop.
So if Peer1 gets an SLPPDU from Peer2 in case of loop the assigned uplinkport will be shutdown after reaches the configured threshold.
