Save config from one switch and put it on another
« on: September 12, 2016, 11:36:40 PM »
Hello,

I have a ERS3524 all configured the way I want it.   I'd like to just copy all the settings and put them on another switch but I have no idea how to do this.

Ideally I could do it with the GUI but if not that is OK.

I have a telnet through the RS232, I have IP access to the switch as well.

Well, you could do it via TFTP which is the path I would take.  Since they are 3K series, it's an easy option.
Do a binary backup like so:
Code: [Select]
copy config tftp address 1.1.1.1 filename switch-backupPlug in to the next switch and restore like so:
Code: [Select]
copy tftp config address 1.1.1.1 filename switch-backupOnce the switch comes back online, change the name and IP, etc., if you were going to use it as an additional switch.  If it's simply for the purposes of backing up and keeping the other one offline, no changes are necessary.
Of course, you can also do ASCII backups via show runs, plugging in the same config on the new switch, in the proper order.  That's the only caveat.  Doing the binary backup does everything for you.

Very much - I saved and restored to the other switch then changed the IPs.

Excellent, nice work!
The only thing I've ever seen if you were to run into problems after changing the IP (and it has been rare) is defaulting certain settings.
As in, if you change the IP but it doesn't communicate properly, default the setting instead of just changing it.
default ip address
default netmask
Then changing the values should "wake it up" properly.
But again, those are the only ones I've really run into, and it's rare that it happens.  Don't know the reason, but defaulting it works perfectly every time.
Thanks!
