Routing vlan to Internet through Comcast on 5520-48t-PWR
« on: June 28, 2016, 06:39:34 PM »
Hi. I bought one of these and followed the guide on Michael McNamara's blog for VLANS and IP routing on an Ethernet Switch.

I have Comcast, and the cable modem is at 10.1.10.1. I have a subnet there. I always used a router behind the Comcast router where I keep my home stuff, and I used the 10.1.10.1 subnet to share a guest network. I was able to set up a couple of vlans. I used 1010 as the vlan for 10.1.10.1, and I just stuck with 1 for my internal 192.168.2.0/24 subnet. I can get to the Internet from the switch using ping, but can I use the switch to allow traffic from the 192.168.2.0 subnet all the way through the comcast router to the Internet and get rid of my personal router? I set the switch up at address 192.168.2.253, and added a 10.1.10.253 address in vlan 1010, but while 10.1.10.253 can be used as a gateway address for equipment in the 1010 vlan, 192.168.2.253 cannot similarly be used as a gateway address on vlan 1. Should this be possible, or do I need to keep my own router at 192.168.2.1?

Welcome to the forums!

You can certainly route on the 5520, you'll need to use the IP address you assign the 5520 as the default gateway for any devices that you want to connect to that VLAN. And you'll also need to add a route on the Comcast router so it knows how to get traffic back to the new VLAN your adding.

Good Luck!

Yes, a 5520 can certainly do routing.  However routers from ISP's tend to be very basic and not support more than one network behind them.  So see if it has a routing ability (RIPv2 maybe or static route entries).  If it doesn't, then you need to keep a more advanced router between the 5520 and the Internet router.
