Nortel 8006 losing ability to use SSH
« on: April 08, 2014, 02:50:54 PM »
All,

I ran into a pretty scary incident recently.  I was trying to ssh into an Nortel 8006 (running 4.1.8.3) and it would close out my putty session, almost like ssh was disabled.  I then consoled in via the console port on the 8006 and was given some frightening errors.

Failed to read filesysytem /PCMCIA

Failed logging cli command
Can't open directory "/flash".
S_iosLib_TOO_MANY_OPEN_FILES

After seeing this I used JDM to take a look at "File System" and everything was empty.  After seeing this we did some disaster recovery prep and restarted it.  While watching boot up, everything looked fine except for this error:
WARNING: THE ALLOWED LOG FILE SIZE HAS EXCEEDED CONFIGURATION LIMITS.
THE FILE SIZE IS CURRENTLY 1090202 BYTES!!!!

After the reboot all files were there and from what we can see there are no continuing issues.  Any idea what caused this or why it happened?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi mikeyvanhecker,

It sounds like you possibly had a memory leak that eventually exceeded your memory limits or your log file exceeded your memory limits.  Keep an eye on your memory use to see if it is creeping up slowly?
