Nortel 5520-24T-PWR updating
« on: April 19, 2018, 02:47:17 PM »
Hello !
Let me start off by saying I am very new to all of this. I understand people get frustrated when newbies don't read up on stuff and not try to solve things on their own. I promise you I have already done a lot of work .

I have a nortel 5520-24T-PWR that I would like to use for ip cams. Its currently on an old version. I have a serial console cable with a null modem adapter and can access it that way in case i screw up the settings.

I can also access the terminal via telnet and web interface via browser (ie + really old java).

I found 17 updates on the web  v4.2.x -> v6.3.x. I found out recently in another post that while it requires incremental updates you can jump one major version to the next. ie 4 to 5 and 5 to 6.

I attempted to start the update process so i setup an TFTP server on my laptop put the bin/img files in the root directory and connected to the switch.

laptop: 192.168.1.12
switch: 192.168.1.11

The laptop can ping the switch ip 192.168.1.11 and obviously its connected to it since im telneting in, however in the command line when i type 5520-24T-PWR> ping 192.168.1.12 it says "host not found"

If the switch cant "see" the laptop i cant give it the file it needs to update so im stuck.

What am I missing?

Presume the nortel switch was factory reset and the only thing i did was change the ip config.

192.168.1.11/255.255.255.0, no gateway, no stack ip
on windows the device was set to 192.168.1.12/255.255.255.0, no gateway

I thought maybe my laptops firewall might be blocking pinging or something but I dont think its that.

Hello & Welcome to the Forums,

are you able to see your PC's Mac-Address on the connected port (my example is port41) ?

CWLAB-5510-48T-01#sho mac-address-table port 41
Mac Address Table Aging Time: 300
Number of addresses: 1

MAC Address    Vid   Source         MAC Address    Vid   Source
----------------- ---- --------     ----------------- ---- --------
00-21-70-xx-xx-xx 3000 Port:41

As well you should see the associated vlan-id (Vid), in your case should be 1

Then verify your IP settings:

show ip

and

show vlan mgmt

show vlan interface info [port where ur PC is connected]

and

show ipmgr

Maybe you can post the outputs here ...

Good luck

Hi MatzeKS!

I switched to another machine and changed the IPs a bit.. switch 192.168.1.10 PC: 192.168.1.12
It looks as if the laptop was blocking ICMP i guess. Its working now.

Thank you for your response.

The connection to open tftp on my windows machine is not happening from the switch :(

I can validate that its serving the files because i did a test transfer using the tftp client on ubuntu (windows subsystem for linux)

switch 192.168.1.10
tftp: 192.168.1.12

is this the correct syntax?

download address 192.168.1.12 diag 55x0_50002_diags.bin

The syntax is correct (and can be verified with "?" after each single part of this command) and it seems your tftpd service is not running and/or incorrect permissions on tftp servers filesystem and/or blocked by local firewall.

Good luck

I can recommend this TFTP-Server for Windows based systems x86/x64:

Last question I promise :)

in the release notes the last version to EXPLICITLY mention the full model name 5520-24T-PWR  is v6.3.1

"Supported Switch Models The Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 Series, supported by software release 6.3, includes the following switch models: •Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 5510-24T •Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 5510-48T •Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 5520-24T-PWR"

however subsequent release notes (v6.3.6) merely name the 5520:

"3.  Platforms Supported Ethernet Routing Switch 5510/5520/5530/5698TFD(-PWR)/5650TD(-PWR)/5632FD"

specifically removing the -24T-PWR from the name for some reason, while including it for other switch names (5698TFD(-PWR)/5650TD(-PWR)).

does this mean that poe support is removed? or that there is another router named 5520 without POE? its confusing why they would not put the full name, i just want to be certain i can update to it..

Anyone here with a 5520-24T-PWR on v6.3.6?

cheers!

scratch that!

Appears as if I got ahead of myself. I was able to apply the v6.3.1 diag but the SW refuses to upload to the switch.

I noticed the SW for v6.3.1 is much larger (19MB) than v6.0.0 (7.36MB) and I see many posts mentioning the size of the file and having issues.

I have tried using 3COM deamon, tftpd64, linux tftpd, and many others.. they all fail after around 10MB or so sometimes even less. Whats worse now is that when it fails lights start to flash in the fiber ports and it reboots.

I have tried so many servers and config options not sure whats left to do.

Ok done! I wrote a little guide in case someone in the future has the same desire to reuse older equipment :)

Instructions for updating a 5520-24T-PWR for a TOTAL newbie:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Got 5520-24T-PWR with v4.2.x off ebay for $35

2) Got a Serial DB9 to USB cable with null modem adapter for when you screw up the settings (ie: no longer accessible via ethernet)

3) Got mobaxterm (works better for serial connection IMO, find the COM port in device manager, make sure you turn off/ on device otherwise it may not show up) /putty (telnet)
Be mindful that your firewall will cause connection issues. Disable it for now!

4) Figured out how to use the nortel UI button to reset the ip to (192.168.192.168) communicate via ethernet
   - Press and hold UI button for 3 seconds
   - Press the UI button 5 times
   - Press and hold the UI button for 3 seconds

5) Figured out how to access web gui via internet explorer. ( use older ie but first configure java security
by including the ip its it allowed list)

6) Did a google search for nortel 5520-24T-PWR software (all versions are on a couple of sites)
I recommend using wget recursively to download them all. Avaya does not allow access without a certain profile.

7) Registered on this forum and asked question when I got stuck.

8 ) Got tftpd64 and used each version's directory as my root directory as I went through the upgrade path
Be mindful that your firewall will cause connection issues. Disable it for now!

9) Update ( install diag(FW) .bin first then do SW .img second, you should see 2 img files, use the one ending with s [includes ssh option])

upgrade path that worked for me:

4.2.1 -> 5.0.9 -> 6.0.0 -> (failed to jump to 6.3.1, so decided to just do one at a time from here) -> 6.1.0 -> 6.2.0
(decided to try to skip versions again here) -> 6.3.1 -> 6.3.6

*each time reading the release notes pdf and doing a search for "5520" making sure its in the supported list

to update (address in this case is your tftps server address) :

select: Command Line Interface...

5520-24T-PWR>enable
5520-24T-PWR#download address 192.168.86.38 diag 5xxx_60021_diags.bin
Downloading Diag Image  [|]
Saving Diag Image       [-]
Finished Upgrading Diag Image
Rebooting

5520-24T-PWR>enable
5520-24T-PWR#download address 192.168.86.38 image 5xxx_636017s.img
Downloading Image  [|]
Saving Image       [\]
Finished Upgrading Image
Rebooting

after installing them all you are updated to -> Release Date:   Feb 26, 2016

Thats as far as you can go with a 5520-24T-PWR

Not bad for a very old switch. At the end the logon screen should look like this:

         ###   ###            ###   ###   ###            ###   ###
        #####   ###          ###   #####   ###          ###   #####

                                               ###

Enter Ctrl-Y to begin.

  ***************************************************************

9) Presuming you have a wifi router and are using this at home first connect your switch to the router using DHCP only
in the ip configuration options after physically plugging in a patch cable to any port, then in the router assign it
a permenant IP now that you have the MAC address. You can switch to BootP and the switch will get assigned the IP you
set in the router. Now its other ports are ready to have ethernet devices connected to it.

I hope this helps anyone that finds it. If you have any questions on how to do this (i know i left out many specifics)
you can PM me for help.

Thanks again to this forum for its help!

Cheers!
