new to this and need some help nortel 5520
« on: November 01, 2014, 03:27:15 PM »
Ok I have not had much experience working with enterprise networks, however I thought I may go back to school and start into getting network certificates.  To see what I thought about it I decided to re due my home network.

I have a quest Actiontec Q1000 running my internet coming into the house. Its using 192.168.0.1 and DCHP to hand out all the ip address with the exception of a few I have as static ip address.

Off of that I have a normal 48 port switch nothing special no configuration capable for that one.

I just bought a Nortel 5520 with POE to play with and use in my home network and add some faster computer to computer speeds. Plus I need the extra ports. I have set the new 5520 using in band switch ip address 192.168.1.2  subnet mask 255.255.255.0  and default gateway192.168.1.1

The Nortel 5520 is using firmware 4.2.0.11 and software 4.3.0.003.

How is the best way to set this up to add into my network? I have tried to figure it out myself but all the explanations are done with the newer 6 software and I don't have anything that new.  Any pointers or help would be appreciated.

Again I am a true newbie.

Any information for basic setup would be good. Or any things I need to watch for.

So I have not been able to ping anything on the 192.168.0.1 area. This includes going to the internet. I think I need to get a routing path to 192.168.0.1 since the Nortel is set to 192.168.1.1. But I cant find out how to do this since I am on a different version then anyone else showing examples. Can anyone help me with this?

So maybe someone can help me with this problem. I am just trying to figure this out and I changed vlan 2 to managed and I am now locked out and can get to the router anymore. I tried to set it back to 192.168.192.168 using the UI button but nothing and ideas on this?

As per your other post, you will have to login to the switch via console cable to fix the problem.  Once you have it working again though you should be using the Nortel JDM application to manage the switch.  It's a free download and should help you in setting up your switch.

JDM download:

You enabled IP routing?  You have a default static route configured?
Many people have posted their configs here (I've posted our in-house complete setup document), so t here should be examples you can use here.
Just remember, the Management VLAN is the one with the IP address on it if you have not assigned IP's to each VLAN yet.

At a quick glance I see your router has the following IP address on the LAN side: 192.168.0.1

You gave your switch the following: 192.168.1.2

Those are completely different subnets and can't communicate with each other.

Connect to the switch with your console cable and change the switch IP to 192.168.0.2 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0)

Now, if you have it set to default (ie: VLAN 1 on all ports) you should be able to plug a LAN computer into any port and be able to ping the switch and router.  You should also be able to telnet into the switch from a PC (not using the console cable) and administer it.

Once you have the switch communicating properly with the router, then you can look at playing with the layer 3 stuff.  First, I would just concentrate on getting it working.

Man this switch is awesome, you have a menu to configure all it.
I dont know if you bought together the cable console but with it you dont have trouble. and in this version forget web view, is terrible.
So in menu you will use SPACE ENTER, PUP, PDW, CTRL+R, and anothers commands to build your configuration.
Try enter in this menu and you dont will have trouble
