New ERS 4000 Software v5.8
« on: June 30, 2014, 12:10:11 PM »
Looks like we have a new version of ERS 4000 code to work with this morning.  Software release v5.8 is out now and has new features such as CLIP, multiple local RO and RW accounts so you don't need shared credentials.  Also, ERS 4800's now get 16K MAC support, increased flash space for code and some QoS changes.  But the one I like to see is Fabric Attach.  It will let you connect devices that don't run the full SPBM code to connect to a SPBM network.  I am thinking ERS 5000's.  Also, some good fixes in this release, so as always, read your release notes!

Looks as though the ERS4500s aren't supported  :o

Does anyone know if they are about to be going end of life? Most of our access switches are 4500s not 4800s.

It may just be a fork in their code for 4800's only.  Kind of like how for the 5500's v6.6 is for 5600's only.  But there has been no announcement for and kind of EoL of any of the 4000 series of switches.

Fabric Attach
With the Fabric Attach (FA) feature you can extend the fabric edge to devices that do not have full
Shortest Path Bridging MAC (SPBM) support. Fabric Attach allows non-SPBM devices to take
advantage of full SPBM support if it is available.
For more information, see Configuring Avaya VENA Fabric Connect on Avaya Ethernet Routing
Switch 4800 Series, NN47205-507.

That feature sounds really interesting...
Itīs always the networks fault!

5.8 is for the 4800's only because of the younger hardware and henge more capabilities. Fabric Attach etc. seem to be needing more resources than the 4500 can provide.

Avaya is not yet EoS'ing the 4500's due to the relatively young age of the product (look at the age of the 5500 series), and the fact that they released the 4500-PWR+ versions not so long ago.

I'm about to test out Fabric Attach this week with a couple ERS stacks that are 10GB connected to another stack that is fabric connected to the SPB backbone.   Ill let you guys know how it turns out.
