Hello,

I need some help with configuring a AVAYA 2500 24port poe series switch with voice and DATA network. I am new with AVAYA and getting little confuse with untage pvid and tagging in avaya .

can some please tell me the simple config for VLAN reassignment

where
port 1-22 DATA untagged
port 1-22 VOICE tagged
port 23 untagged voice ( connected AVAYA G450 )
port 24 untagged DATA ( uplink to router )

Hi Tashfeen1.

Just some observations:

You didn't assign a management VLAN - ERS(config)# vlan mgmt xxx Not sure if it would automatically assign the IP address to the default VLAN 1.  Also, I prefer not to use the default VLAN for anything. Create another VLAN and ensure you remove all ports from VLAN 1.

The best practice for edge switches is to use autopvid.  However, I think what you have would work.

vlan ports 23 filter-untagged-frame enable - this conflicts with your requirement for port 23 untagged voice.  This is used for tagged uplink ports.

Basically you have the right idea with the tagging. You set the ports 1-22 to be untagpvidonly, assign them the pvid of the DATA VLAN and also add them to the VOICE VLAN.  In this way, the ports would be untagged members of the DATA VLAN and tagged members of the VOICE VLAN.

Shouldn't vlan members 1 1-22,24 be vlan members add 1 1-22,24?

This is what I've come up with so far.  I hope it helps.

thank you for reviewing the configs. i will make the changes and test it. I have another scenario which is given below:


VLAN Configuration details.
VLAN ID         Description
20                MPLS Network. VLAN removed by diagram 002. Prior to diagram 002 the uplink to                  Avaya switches on port 5 should be access only members of VLAN 4. Remove from all
other VLANS.

1                  Untagged LAN connections. Port 1 on each Avaya switch should be access only members
                    of VLAN 1. Remove from all other VLANs.

2                   Untagged VoIP Network. Port 7 on each Avaya switch should be access only members of
                    VLAN 2.

21                 Untagged VLAN 3 traffic. Reserved for SonicWALL HA connectivity to the DSL modem.
                    Avaya switch ports 2 & 3 should be access only members of VLAN 3. Remove from all
                     other VLANS.

Hello Pat,

do you think that you will have time to review the config today? i have to cut-over these switches tomorrow at 11 am PST. also few questions:

1- after configuring these switch i was not able to my other VLAN as an untaged even though i define as an untagged, should i think Avaya by default shows these as an untagged?

2- do i need to define other VLANS as PVID in this configs?

please explain the concept of PVID'

3- what is the purpose of these command bellow and how we use it

Hi again.

I went through the configuration you provided.  Here are my observations:

All your PVIDs are 0.  This is probably due to your vlan configcontrol being flexible.  While this is a personal preference, I would suggest you use autopvid.

Use vlan configcontrol autopvid.

vlan ports 2/8-24 tagging tagAll

This is not correct based on your requirements.  You should set these also as untagpvid only.  Here is what you do to ensure the PVID is correct.

First set configcontrol to autopvid.

Set ports to untagpvidonly.  vlan port 1/8-24, 2/8-24 tagging untagpvidonly

Assign the ports to VLAN 2 first.  vlan members add 2 1/8-24, 2/8-24
Then assign ports to VLAN 1.  vlan members add 1 1/8-24, 2/8-24

Check that the ports have the correct PVID of 1.  If not you can use vlan port 1/8-24,2/8-24 pvid 1

Ports 8-24 should now be set to untag VLAN 1 and tag VLAN 2.

Also, the PVIDs for the other ports are 1 because you had used flexible configcontrol.  This setting does not change the PVID.  You can set the PVIDs using the command I gave above.

For example.  vlan port 1/2-3,2/2-3 pvid 21, would set the PVID of ports 2 and 3 to 21.

I know it takes some getting use to the whole PVID concept.  From Avaya documentation:

VLAN Configuration Control (VCC) allows a switch administrator to control how VLANs are modified. VLAN Configuration Control is globally applied to all VLANs on the switch.

PVID (Port VLAN ID) – The primary VLAN member of a port. When an untagged frame is received, it is placed in this VLAN.

The following four options are available for controlling VLAN modification:
1. Strict – An untagged port can only belong to one VLAN. You will not be able to add a VLAN to this port unless you first delete the previous VLAN port membership. This is done by removing the port from all other VLANs of which it is a member before adding it to the new VLAN. The PVID of the port is changed to the new VID to which it was added.

Strict is the factory default setting.

2. Automatic – This option automatically adds an untagged port to a new VLAN and automatically removes it from any previous VLAN membership. The PVID of the port is automatically changed to the VID of the VLAN it joins. Since the port is first added to the new VLAN and then removed from any previous membership, the Spanning Tree Group participation of the port will not be disabled as long as the VLANs involved are in the same Spanning Tree Group.

3. AutoPVID – When an untagged port is added to a new VLAN, the port is added to the new VLAN and the PVID assigned to the new VID without removing it from any previous VLAN memberships. Using this option an untagged port can have membership in multiple VLANs.

4. Flexible – When this option is used, an untagged port can belong to an unlimited number of VLANs. Any new additions of an untagged port to a new VLAN does not change the PVID of that port.

VLAN Configuration Control is only applied to ports with the tagging modes of Untag All and Tag PVID Only. Ports with the tagging modes of Tag All and Untag PVID Only are not governed by VLAN Configuration Control. Ports with the tagging modes of Tag All and Untag PVID Only can belong to multiple VLANs regardless of VLAN Configuration Control settings and must have their PVID manually changed.

vlan ports 1-10 tagging unTagPvidOnly filter-unregistered-frames disable

The filter-unregistered-frames disable is required for IP phones.  It has something to do with issues with upgrading the firmware on the phones.

vlan ports 48 tagging tagAll filter-untagged-frame enable

This is a good practice for tagged uplink ports.   Any untagged frames are discarded.

There may be some slight differences between the ERS switches (4000, 5000, 3500) and the software release.  For example, I know that with the latest Release for the ERS 4000's a lot of the LLDP configuration is now in there by default.  So make sure and read your release notes.

What switches and software release are you interested in configuring LLDP on?  Or do you just want a general idea?  Either way, the first document is great.

Hello Pat,

Thank you for quick response, I have a simple question…  I was successful in making LLDP work but only in conjunction with ADAC to set tagging of the voice traffic with the voice vlan information.  Can you tell me if it is even possible to just use LLDP to do all VOIP phone device detection and auto configuration and to do away with ADAC completely and if so, how is this accomplished through the Avaya switches?

Environment:
Avaya ERS 5000 series data switches
Nortel ip phones 2004 but switching over to Cisco SPA504G voip phones
ADAC set currently to detect Nortel MAC ranges and to set voice vlan

We want to just use LLDP to do detection and auto configuration of phones, is that possible?

It is possible since LLDP is an industry standard and can work on its own. You will just have to configure the ports to be tagged members of the VOICE VLAN and untagged members of the DATA VLAN manually.

Set ports to untagpvidonly.

Add ports to DATA and VOICE VLANs ensuring that the pvid is that of the DATA VLAN.

Since you are not using ADAC, you would also have to take care of QoS manually.

Enable QoS trusted interfaces on uplink ports:

#qos if-group name trusted_interfaces class trusted
#qos if-assign port 24 name trusted_interfaces


Assuming port 24 is your uplink port.

Now to remark VoIP traffic coming from the IP phones. Let's say your VOICE VLAN is 100.

#qos traffic-profile classifier name voip vlan-min 100 vlan-max 100 vlan-tag tagged ethertype 0x800 update-dscp 46 update-1p 6
#qos traffic-profile set port 1-23 name voip


I cannot remember if I mentioned the setting of the QoS queue set on the ERS 4500 switches.

#qos agent queue-set 4

The switch will prompt you to reset. Before you do it is a good practice to #save config
