Need help for replace unit (base or not) in a stack Avaya (4500)
« on: September 25, 2013, 07:46:58 AM »
Hi all !
My name is Eddy, i'm 21 years old and i'm network administrator in Le Mans in France ! =D
I manage a park of 100 switchs Avaya and 2 core.
My level in english isn't good so be indulgent ;-)

I need help for replace a swicth in a stack of ERS 4500 (4526T-PWR)
Firm: 5.3.0.3 / Soft: 5.6.3.024

I want replace this switch (for exemple unit 2 on Test1) WITHOUT shutdown the stack.

When i replace a switch, the new switch take the configuration of the stack BUT all interfaces go in VLAN 1 ...
So i loose many strand of code , i loose my link mlt or smlt on interface 25/26, i loose lldp configuration for my ToIP phone etc...

VLACP is enable on the 2 stacks.
AUR is enable too...

I have read many documentaion of avaya's switch and i don't understand...

Do you have an explication or a procedure ?
Beforehand Thanks you !

I have done it several times with SW 5.6.2 without any issues.
Would be very disappointing if you loose all VLAN configuration, when you replace a unit.

I had that problem with older SW 5.3.x Releases. I thought Avaya has fixed that since 5.6

Did you test it only one time, or is the problem reproduceable at your test switches ?

It´s always the networks fault!

Hi Dominik,
Thanks you for your response,
This stack is a "test stack" for learn this procedure
We have test many versions of SW and we are ever this problem, all interfaces of the new unit go in VLAN1

We have test with a version 5.1, a 5.4 and 5.6 naturally...

I don't understand this problem...

Hi Eddy,

I'm french and i work on Avaya device too.

Can you describe your process to replace the switch ?
I made it many times, it always works for me but i know that even in 5.6 versions you can have configuration loss.

regards,

Hello Eddy,

You can use the following procedure:

1) connect to the stack and save the config
2) you can save the config of the unit to be replaced in AUR with the command "stack auto-unit-replacement config save unit x"
3) the command "show stack auto-unit-replacement" should indicate unit x is "ready for replacement"
4) disconnect unit x and remove it
5) put in the new switch and connect is, power it up
6) the switch will get the diag/agent software from the stack, as well as the configuration, and might reboot a few times.
7) when the switch is online (verify with "show stack-info") issue the command "stack auto-unit-replacement config restore unit x"
8) the unit should have received the full backup of the original unit. If not, you can always paste your original configuration into the stack as it will overwrite current settings. This means that if the new unit as default settings (all ports in vlan 1 etc) these will be overwritten, all other units should already have config identical to the parameters you just pasted in.

Kind regards,

Hi Johan,
Thanks you, your procedure is ok. =D
UNIT who replace retrieve the conf of base unit.
Just 1 ligne does not pass:

lldp tx-tlv port 1/1-24, 2/1-24, 3/1-24 dot1 port-vlan-id
Warning: Port(s) not member of all VLANs configured on DUT

Any ideas ?
