locked out of a nortel 5520
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:48:51 PM »
How do I get back in? I have tried the UI trick to get it set to  ip address 192.168.192.168 does not work. I am looking at getting a console cable so I can try to get in and reset everything but is this going to be any different then using the rj45 cable right into the switch? Also if I should try this what cable do I need? I have usb and rj45 available on this computer. I don't have the same port that is on the 5520 switch for the console.

Hi Rob,

You might need to buy a USB to DB9 converter to connect.

5520 switch side - RJ45 port
You need 2 cables.
1) RJ45 port and DB9 Female  (ie..one side RJ45 and another side DB9 Female)
2) DB9 male and USB.

If you have the above cables, you will be able to console into the switch. You might also need drivers for the second cable.

Cheers

You need a serial port to reset a switch back to defaults.  If your system doesn't have one you will have to purchase a USB to serial adapter.  Then you need a Nortel console cable to plug in which is a straight-through serial cable.  If you have two Cisco serial cables you can use an RJ-45 coupler to connect them together which also works as a Nortel serial cable.  If you need a terminal program, grab TeraTerm (freeware).  Then set your serial port to 9600-8-N-1 and you should be able to console in to the switch which you need to do on boot-up to reset it back to defaults.

I am back in! Thanks everyone. Now I just need to figure out how to finish setting it up. I will post a new link for that. Thanks again
