istMLT auto-negotiates at 10 half?
« on: July 04, 2013, 03:21:34 PM »
Configuring an ist between two ERS 8600's (hard to not say passport), and wondering why they auto negotiate at 10/half?

Forcing them to 1000/full seems to work ... is this just a power saving feature, seeing as the ist traffic doesn't need much bandwidth?

Should I leave them at 10/half or is it safe for me to use these at gig speed?

that's weird, are must be using copper to make your iST?

but to the best of my knowledge its best practice to use the full capacity of your IST links and to disable any kind of rate or cp limiting on those ports.

if you can go 1gb, then I would do that.

What version of software?
What model of card are the ports on?

Talk about prompt responses - they day after July 4th no less. You guys should be in no condition to operate a keyboard; I'm impressed.

I'm in Canada, so I'm a few days removed from "independence day"-like celebrations.

Software:
7.3.1

The cards in use are:
Chassis - 8006CMHS
Switch Fabric - 8834XG (ports are on these cards)
CPU - 8895SF

We are using copper, but I should elaborate ...
  • We have two of these chassis, each with two switch fabric cards and two cpu cards.
  • Initially, using copper GBICs on SFP ports, we connected two Cat5e cables, one from each of (Chassis 1) 1/31 & 2/31 going to (Chassis 2) 1/31 & 2/31.
  • iST came up fine, all seemed to work well. While testing redundancy, we noticed just about all connectivity was lost when we disconnected the iST cable connected to the "DesignatedPort". Connectivity was fine when we unplugged the cable connected to the non-"DesignatedPort". We also noticed, despite the cable being unplugged, the port was still reporting as "up" on the ERS device manager. This is when we started to suspect our non-Nortel GBICs.
  • We then decided to use regular copper ports (1/20, 2/20) for the iST to rule out the GBICs.
  • Everything works as expected, redundancy testing included. We now see at least one benefit to spending the extra dough on Nortel GBICs.
  • The only "thing" is that that these new ports negotiated a 10/half speed, however we can force them to Gig/full and them change back to auto-negotiate and which point they remain at Gig/full.

All is working well as is, so there isn't a problem so-to-speak. I was just trying to confirm if for some strange reason we should be using 10/half ... I'm quite obviously an iST / SMLT newbie. Sounds like Gig/full it is!

Thanks again!

Shawn

is this a net new install, or an existing install?

as well, are you a beta trial customer for Avaya?  because 7.3.1 is not GA yet.  7.2.1.1 just came out a few weeks ago.

maybe you can dump your configs here with a show tech so we can take a peek

Sorry, my bad - we are running 7.1.5.3.

Thanks for the offer to check the configs, but I think we're alright.
