Finding MAC address of connected devices on 5520/5650 hybrid stack
« on: September 26, 2013, 12:47:48 PM »
Hi.  I'm trying to find out the MAC address of devices connected to various ports on a 5520/5650 hybrid stack running FW: 6.0.0.15 SW:v6.2.4.011.  I thought this would be a trivial task, but I guess I'm approaching it wrong because I'm not getting the results I wanted.

I have two dell R510 servers with 2 NICs (4 ports) each.  These two servers are VMware 5 ESX hosts.  Each host is configured with 2 management network ports and 2 production network ports.  I know the MAC address of each interface, but because the servers were cabled by a different team, I want to identify and label (port description) each of the connected interfaces in the switch config.

The VMware environment is online and working.

I tried "show mac-address-table port x/x" where I specify each of the 8 ports involved.  I was hoping to get back the list of known mac addresses and determine where these NICs were connected to the stack. Here's what I'm getting:

MDF_5520#show mac-address-table port 3/6
Mac Address Table Aging Time: 300
Number of addresses: 0

MAC Address    Vid      Source            MAC Address    Vid      Source
----------------- ---- --------------     ----------------- ---- --------------
MDF_5520#

Or another

MDF_5520#show mac-address-table port 3/19
Mac Address Table Aging Time: 300
Number of addresses: 2

MAC Address    Vid      Source            MAC Address    Vid      Source
----------------- ---- --------------     ----------------- ---- --------------
00-50-56-81-24-47    5 Unit:3 Port:19     00-50-56-81-61-4A    5 Unit:3 Port:19
MDF_5520#

This one shows a MAC address, but it's not one of the known MACs for these servers.

Another:

MDF_5520#show mac-address-table port 3/37
Mac Address Table Aging Time: 300
Number of addresses: 1

MAC Address    Vid      Source            MAC Address    Vid      Source
----------------- ---- --------------     ----------------- ---- --------------
00-50-56-9A-39-6E    5 Unit:3 Port:37

Again, not one of the MAC addresses I have on my list.

I am willing to accept that maybe the MACs I was given are wrong, but I don't know how to explain the empty or partially empty results above.

What am I doing wrong?  Thanks in advance.  I learn a ton from this forum.

I should mention that I know which 8 ports are involved on the switch.  I just don't know what function each port serves in the system - is port 3/6 a VM management port or a production network port?  That's why I was hoping to compare the connected MAC address with the list of MAC addresses I was given for each interface by the VM team.
