Extra Core Switch
« on: April 24, 2017, 09:37:06 AM »
Dear all,

I currently have 2x 5632FD configured as collapsed Core (IST/MTL/VRRP etc) and around 8 Edge switches.
My Core switches are located at one location. I have a site that is connected via wireless and all others through fiber / Copper. Also almost all site have their own vlan. The problem I have is that all my sites traffic routes through the core and then back to the server in that location. I want to minimize that and only want traffic to go to Location A if there is a server over there.
e.g. Client ip 172.16.1.100/24 (Physical location B)
Servers ip 10.10.10.100 (Physical location B)
Core Switch (physical Location A)

What would be the best approach ?

The only way I can think of is to do Layer 3 at the sites.  In this way routing can take place locally and not have to go to the core.

It would require a redesign of your network.  What switches do you have at the client locations?

Hi Pat,

I have ers 4826 series. Based on my current design, is below workable ? Square VRRP design

site A
Core 1 (ers 5632) ---- Core 2 (ers 5632) ---->> VRRP / OSPF / IST etc ---> EDGE Switches connect via SMLT
|                              |
Site B
Core 3 (ers 4826) ---- Core 4 (ers 4826) ---->> VRRP / OSPF / IST etc----> EDGE Switches connect via SMLT

Is there a config sample available ? or can anyone help. I only see this scenario in the 8300 series

Hi Subnet11.

The ERS 4800 does not support SMLT.  That is to say, you cannot create an IST between 2 4800's and have edge switches dual-home to the core via SMLT.

You will require at least the ERS 5k series with the relevant license.  I'm not sure if the VSP 4ks support SMLT.
