ERS 8600 Core --> ERS 5600 Distribution - FDB Timer settings
« on: February 03, 2016, 02:10:58 PM »
Hi folks.

I have a network consisting of two 8600s in a cluster as the core and several 5632s connected via MLTs to the core 8600s.

According to Avaya's Best Practices, I should increase the FDB timer on the core VLANs on the 8600s to 21601, but leave the default value of 300 on the ERS 5632s.  Would this not cause an issue in this particular network?  In this case you have the same core VLAN between the 8600s and 5600s but with different FDB timers.

I'm assuming the recommendation refers to core VLANs that exists between similar switches.

In my case, should I leave ALL timers at the default of 300 seconds?

Note that the 5632s are distribution switches and not access switches.

Thanks.

ARP timeout is 21600 seconds, you want the 8600s to re-arp before the fdb timer reaches zero. We've always used 21610 to make certain that the re-arp finishes. By all means, do keep the standard timers on your distribution switches, that's what we've always done.

Keep in mind that the reason for a long timeout on the 8600s comes from the (potentially) large number of entries in the fdb that needs to be synced with the IST peer. The CPU isn't quite up to the task if it's too often, and you will have multiple and continuous routing issues because of this. The VSP9000 has SMLT-support in hardware, and handles this much, much better.

One more question.  Should the FDB timer be changed on the IST VLAN as well?  I noticed that in Avaya's Large Campus Tech. Config. Guide example, they do not change the FDB timer on the IST VLAN, just the Core VLAN.
