Dhcp-relay bug on version 6.6 - ERS 5600
« on: February 06, 2014, 04:12:59 AM »
Hello Guys,

I'm testing ERS 5600 version 6.6.0, i'm interested by new ARP scaling (4096).
I'm in smlt triangle with vrrp configuration based on two ERS 5650 for core side and on ERS 4550 for edge side.
After few tests, i note that dhcp-relay doesn't work correctly.
my test is :
- One client connected on edge device in vlan 20
- One server connected on edge device in vlan 30, with static ip address.

with port mirror and wireshark capture, i can see that :
- client send dhcp discover, edge switch forward it on one smlt link
- core switch receive it, increase dhcp-relay requests counter and forward it to dhcp-server through the smlt port.
- edge switch receive it and forward to the dhcp serveur which reply with offer message.
- edge switch forward the offert to the core through the smlt
- core switch receive the offert and the packet disappears misteriously.
I have checked every out port, dhcp-relay replies counter stay to 0, no error or packet dropped on ports statistics.

I tested a downgrade in 6.3.3 and it works fine ! to be sure, i checked difference between 6.6.0 and 6.3.3 configuration and verbose version : not a lot of difference, only few new commands and dhcp-relay lines are same.

is someone have noticed this issue ?

Haven't tested 6.6 yet.  Sounds familiar.  Back in the 5.1X days, if you were running Static/local redistribution of routes and a DHCP packet came in that was bigger than 512bytes, it got dropped.
Try changing to a full OSPF on every interface design (passive on the ones you don't need routes distributed on) and retest.  If the problem goes away, then that bug is back.
Note, this bug prevented the Nortel-specific phone options from being received.

Hi Tankll,

Thanks for your answer but i don't use routes redistribution.
My test lab is very simple, 3 vlan (IST(100), server(30) and user(20)), VRRP, dhcp-relay and that all.
A WI is open with Avaya.

That bug, or a very similar one, is still present in 6.2.4. Our VAR claims it's resolved in 6.3.3. That roll-up might not have made it to 6.6.

As mentioned erlier the bug has shown up in 6.2.0 to 6.2.4 and had hown up again in 6.3 to 6.3.2 and now we have it again in 6.6.

Your only chance is to open a case at the Avaya support and wait for a fixed 6.6.x version.
Or you roll back to 6.3.3.
For me it is not understandable why a known bug is not fixed in a nwe release even, when it is a feature release.  The support has already the fixed code, it only has to be implemented in the new SW version.

Hopefully Avaya will bring out a fixed 6.6.x very soon.

Cheers
It´s always the networks fault!

Hello,

Out of curiosity when only 1 link is active to one core does this issue still present itself? I have a similar issue I am troubleshooting and in my case disabling one uplink so only one uplink to the core is active fixes the issue.

Thanks,
Stefan
