Connecting modem to untagged or PC port of IP Phone
« on: March 05, 2015, 01:49:41 AM »
Dear All,

I have a doubt , can we make/add a modem/linksys router & can add two or more PC on modem which is connected data port on IP phone.

I tried it , its working . PC can easily connect to network , get IP from DHCP server & can other works.

I have seen many scenario where IP Phone + PC setup is used on tagging untagpvidony port configuration.

My doubts:

1) Is it making loop or some broadcast stormin furure?
2) Is it recommended or widely used scenario?
3) Can we connect a TP-link 24 port switch to untagged port of phone & connect 24 PCs?
4) Can anyone explain me the working behavior of connected a modem or linksys to untagged or PC port? Please

Regards
Faizan

Port Config:
vlan create 10 type port voice-vlan
vlan create 20,30 type port
vlan name 10 "Voice"
vlan name 20 "Cluster Data"
vlan name 30 "Admin Data"
vlan ports 1 tagging tagAll
vlan ports 2-28 tagging unTagPvidOnly
vlan configcontrol flexible
vlan members 1 NONE
vlan members 10 1,3-28
vlan members 20,30 ALL
vlan ports 1 pvid 10
vlan ports 2-28 pvid 20
vlan configcontrol automatic

It's certainly NOT recommended but it can be done... but remember just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean that you should do it.

1) If someone puts a loop on the switch you have hanging off the IP phone then you'll obviously have a problem.
2) Not a recommended scenario
3) Sure, but again not recommended.
4) I believe you meant to say hub or switch? It just extended the collision domain depending if it's a hub or switch.

The idea behind having the PC port is that you can utilize a single cable to connect both the IP phone and the PC at the same time, not that you can connect 24+ devices to the back of an IP phone. In best practice you would run station cable to every device and cable that back to a central IDF/MDF.

If you are adverse to running cable then I would suggest you try looking at utilizing 802.11 wireless. Depending on your applications today's 802.11n/ac networks can provide a lot of bandwidth without the need for a lot of cabling.

Good Luck!
