Author Topic: Configuring Trunk ports on Nortel 5510 to work with Brocade VDX Switches!  (Read 1269 times)

Hello everyone,

My first post on this forum so please don't mind if I haven't posted this in the right section or missed out any information.

I am having an issue with configuring Trunk Ports on the Nortel 5510 Stack (2x5510s) to work with Brocade VDX 6740B switches. I've attached the topology diagram with this post, just to make things a bit clear.

The problem is passing the traffic from the Nortel to the Brocade switches and I'm unable to pin point what's causing this and which devices are not configured correctly. Below are my findings:

1. When I change the Port 1/31 and 2/31 to the TRUNK port and have PVID set to 1,2 or 203 > Nothing works. (Doesn't make sense)

2. When I change the Port 1/31 and 2/31 to the ACCESS port and have PVID set to 1, 2 or 203 >  Only VLAN which is set as PVID works. (Makes sense)

3. When I change the Port 1/31 and 2/31 to the UnTagPVID port and have PVID set to 1, 2 or 203 > Only VLAN which is set as PVID works. (Kinda make sense)

At the point of time, I've set the ports to UnTagPVID and have PVID set to 2 and it works for that VLAN, If I change the PVID value to 203, Vlan 203 works and Vlan 2 stops working. All I am looking for is have both VLAN work on these ports.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't have any VDX switches to play with, but if you are running LACP in your core and it can be distributed across cores, then you could run a native VLACP trunk to the 5500 series switch.

Otherwise stick with MLT on the 5500 and whatever the VDX does for Virtual Chassis.  Just make sure all are in VLAN Tag All to make life easier in the future.

Thanks for your reply.

We tried setting up MLT on Nortel and LACP on the Brocades, but no avail.
We then tried setting up LACP on both, but no avail.

We then took a step back and tried to create a simple trunk over a single trunk and took LAGs completely out of the equation, but suprisingle even that failed. We're unable to create a simple trunk between both the switches.. So I've a feeling that it's is either Brocade or the VXRails dropping the tagged packets, as when the link is in access or untagpvid mode, one Vlan works at a time, depending upon which is set as the PVID.
