Hello !

First of all, I apologize for my English which is far from perfect. So, I'm an apprentice in the IT department of a hospital center.

My supervisor asked me to take care of the backup of our switchs. We have a full avaya infrastructure with the software Configuration and Orchestration Manager (COM) with a License Version 3.0.

Our switchs are divided into two versions : ERS 5000 and ERS 4000. Currently, backups of the ERS 5000 switches work without worry. On the other hand, the backups of the ERS 4000 (ERS 4850 GTS-PWR+ version Software 5.9.2.047) don't want to work...

I explain the different manipulations made :

In Device and Server Credentials Editor, I created a new device (1AP) for which I specified its IP Address (........) + Read Community (..........) + Write Community (..........) + Telnet User (RW) + Password (..........).

In Bulk Configuration Manager (BCM), a software in COM, I created a task (1AP) and I selected my corresponding device.

When I launch my task, I receive the following error message :

CBR_Backup : 1AP : Initializing...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Checking credentials existence...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Empty SSH Credentials while checking device credentials.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Invalid of no SSH credentials found while login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Telnet connection :Error while login to device.Error while executing on stream. Network connectivity is lost. Please try again.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Could not get a device connection.

I thought I was RW user was not recognized. So I did another test by creating a new user but without success.

So I thought that my relationship with Device and Server Credentials Editor was not working. So I deleted my previously created (1AP) entry.

When I launch my task, I receive the new following error message :

CBR_Backup : 1AP : Initializing...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Checking credentials existence...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Empty Telnet Credentials while checking device credentials.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Empty SSH Credentials while checking device credentials.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Invalid or no SSH credentials found while login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Telnet connection:Error while login to device.Login failed; invalid login name or password.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Could not get a device connection.

Having dismissed the hypothesis of authentification failure, I tried to use the SSH protocol (taking care to add the necessary parameters in Device and Server Credentials Editor) instead of the Telnet protocol but whitout success.

What I don't understand is that I can log on to my stack of switches (from the server hosting COM) in Telnet using the user RW with the password specified in Device and Server Credentials Editor.

The bizarre thing is that when I remove the password authentification, backing up my stack of switches (1AP) via BCM is working successfully as you can see :

CBR_Backup : 1AP : Initializing...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Checking credentials existence...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Empty SSH Credentials while checking device credentials.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Invalid or no SSh credentials found while login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Logged in using Telnet protocol.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Check if the device runs a supported image.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Check local TFTP server state and enable it if needed.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Transferring backup file by TFTP to file /001y/config
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Backup file successfully transfered.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Transferring compare needed file by TFTP.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Compare file successfully transfered.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : TFTP transfer done.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Copy backup result to BCM storage.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Logout from device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Register new created backup archive.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Completed successfully.

What amazes me most is that I have performed exactly the same manipulations with the ERS 5000 (using password authentification) and the backup via BCM wworks successfully.

Would you have an idea or a track that could help me find the solution please ? I have been looking for a solution for 2 days. =(

Thank you in advance for the time you will give me when reading my message.

Hi Thibaud,

first of all, your version of COM is outdated, you should use the latest available version 3.1.3.
Additionally COM will be replaced by AVAYA with "COM Plus" and/or AFO.

Regarding you password issues, please try this:

- create an local user account on all of your ERS "username add <username> role-name RW password"
- On "Device and Server Credentials Editor" add this User/Password under "SSH" Tab
- make sure your created seed(s) are covering to all of devices IPs (Loopback IPs, etc.)

Good luck

Hello MatzeKS,

Thank you for your answer !

I agree with you, it has been several months that I report to my superiors that we would have to upgrade our version of COM since it dates from 01 June 2012... Unfortunately, having no direct contract with Avaya and I don't know where I can find our Sold To number. It's therefore not possible for me to create an account on their site in order to download the new version of COM here : https ://support.avaya.com/downloads/download-details.action?contentId=C20162121646279120_5&productId=P0716

Regarding my password issue :

During my tests with SSH, I had already tried to create a new account other than the default RW but it hadn't worked. In case of doubt, I tried again by creating user TEST with pass TEST while taking care to specify the necessary parameters in the SSH part of Device and Server Credentials Editor but it didn't work either as you can see :

CBR_Backup : 1AP : Initializing...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Checking credentials existence...
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Login to device.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : SSH connection :Error while executing on stream. Network connectivity is lost. Please try again.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Telnet connection :Error while login to device.Login failed; invalid login name or password.
CBR_Backup : 1AP : Could not get a device connection.

Thanks to this test, I had deduced that the problem didn't come from the protocol used, since if you look at my test with Telnet, I get the same error message :

CBR_Backup : 1AP : Telnet connection :Error while login to device.Error while executing on stream. Network connectivity is lost. Please try again.

In fact, thinking about it, I think the problem could come from the configuration of my stack of switches but I don't see what I could have forgotten...

Here are the different parameters used :

ip default-gateway address_IP_of_my_router_gateway

tftp-server address_IP_of_my_COM_server

telnet-access enable

user add TEST role-name RW password TEST

cli password telnet local

ipmgr source-ip 4 address_IP_of_my_COM_server mask 255.255.255.255

telnet-access source-ip 4 address_IP_of_my_COM_server mask 255.255.255.255

I apologize in advance if I did'nt answer all your questions because I didn't understand what you implied about :

"make sure your created seed(s) are covering to all of devices IPs (Loopback IPs, etc.)"

Thank you in advance for your patience with me. =)

ok, no problem  ;)

"make sure your created seed(s) are covering to all of devices IPs (Loopback IPs, etc.)" means:

- you have to define on "Device and Server Credentials Editor" IP-Subnet Range(s) where COM performs an "lookup" which username/password/community-strings,ssh-user/password, etc. he has to use by connecting your devices you add in your seed (mostly the central routing instance(s) which is/are connected to most of your devices

Please have a look in current (public) available documentation for COM to verify that you missed something.

http://support.avaya.com/css/P8/documents/100182479

Additionally I uploaded an PDF which explains how to configure COM in context to SNMPv3.
I guess you'll hit a goal  ;)

Good luck

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the "post digging", but I don't usually leave a post unanswered. To solve the problem, I managed to convince my manager to get the latest version of the COM software. This time, everything works perfectly.

I wanted to thank you for the time you gave me MatzeKS !

Good day to you. =)

Good for you!
Glad it is all working properly!
Of note, I would recommend you get to 5.9.4 code on the 4850's though.  We ran into a bunch of bugs on 5.9.2

HelloTankll,

During the upgrade of COM, I also convinced my superior to update all our switches with our network hearts because I had actually seen that there were a lot of bugs in older versions, especially with the SMLT.

Now we use the following versions :
ERS_55XX : 636017s
ERS_4850 : 595053s

Thank your for the precision in any case. =)

Have a good day !
