Bad port mask

When this term Bad Port Mask is used in a Nortel error message what does it refer to?  Is it an If Index?  Software Port in Linux?  Just curious.  I asked about it from Avaya and I was on my corporate account not my partner account and couldn't see the link it was internal to Avaya.  Once I logged onto my Partner account the explanation was less than explanatory.  It said the switch was fine.  So no one on chat at Avaya could tell me the meaning at the time.   I have a few more resources but they also could not explain.  I would appreciate it if anyone could.
