5530 XFP module compatability
« on: December 08, 2015, 02:15:01 PM »
I'm looking to utilize the xfp modules on my 5530. My manual says:
  • Multimode
    10GBASE-SR XFP, 850-nm, LC
    300 m AA1403005-E5 $1479.95

However I have access to some finistar's:
  • 10 Gigabit 10GBase-SR/SW Ethernet IEEE 802.3ae
    10G Fibre Channel 1200-Mx-SN-1
    850nm short-wavelength XFP transceiver
300m reach at 10.5 Gbps data rate on 50/125µ MMF

Anyone know if they will be compatible? Or do I need specifically nortel?

Anyone's XFP's should work as long as they meet the correct specifications.  Avaya doesn't lock-out other manufacturers optics from operating in their equipment.  That being said.  If there is a problem they could say that since you are not using supported optics they can't help you.  So we usually have a set of Avaya optics around to troubleshoot with.

Thank you Telair. I found some avaya modules that I'll pick up in case the finistar's don't work. Hopefully all goes well. I've been very happy running my 5510 and 5520, adding the 5530 will complete the stack.

We've very good experiences with any type of transceivers from our partner Flexoptics:

Good luck

Just to clarify... :)

XFPs are operating in forgiving mode on all platforms, including the ERS8x00.
When you move to the VSP4000/7200/8000/9000, there's a fair bit of difference.

All of the VSP above is in "forgiving" mode on SFPs. Avaya won't help you if you use non-Avaya SFPs, but the ports will come up. The same goes for SFP+ Direct Attach Cables, the port will come up but Avaya won't help you with any issues.

SFP+ Optical modules:
VSP4000   Forgiving (will work, but unsupported)
VSP7200   Strict (won't come up)
VSP8000   Strict (won't come up)
VSP9000   Strict (won't come up)

Best regards,

Řyvind

Unfortunately I am not as lucky, unless they're configurable somehow.

Hi JaySmith, this one of our major reason to kick FINISAR out of our portfolio years ago and use Flexoptics instead  ;)

For third party optics I like using MRV as they have a module for everything.

I know Fiberstore has 3rd-party transceiver optics.
