5520 latest firmware 6.0.0.18 no downgrade dilemma
« on: May 09, 2014, 12:24:53 PM »
We have 20 5520 stacks all running fw 6.0.0.9 and sw 6.1.2.029.  We have started receiving new 5520's with the lastest 6.0.0.18 fw that can not be upgraded.  Avaya does not recommend running 6.1.2 on the latest 6.0.0.18 fw.  Avaya support is telling me I need to upgrade to 6.17>6.2.0>6.2.7>6.3.x.  This is going to be very time consuming.  I'm concerned we are going to have a switch die in a stack before we have a chance to upgrade.  I know the software versions have to match in a stack.  Does anyone have any have experience with integrating new 6.0.0.18 fw 5520 switches in stacks with older software?

Also I'm not sure if I want to make the jump to 6.3.x for stability concerns.  Any thoughts on which version of 6.2.x we should upgrade to?  I'm not looking for additional features from 6.1.2, just stability.

Right now I am a very happy person with the vast majority of my switches running on v6.2.7.  I have some switches that need some newer features running on v6.3.3, but I am not sure that code is ready for general deployment yet.  It's stable with my gear, don't get me wrong.  I just like to see a couple of bug-fix releases come out before I am happy with the code enough for general deployment.  Maybe in one more revision as long as they knock some more bugs out of that code.

As for the upgrade path.  As I recall from v6.1.x you should be able to go directly to any v6.2.x code you want.  It's only if you want to go to v6.3.x that you have to go from v6.1 -> v6.2.x -> 6.3x

From experience to upgrade to 6.3.x you need to be at least on 6.2.4 or it won't let you do it.

Agree with Telair that 6.2.7 is a very good, stable release.  I don't remember having to go through 6.2.0 to get there.  The only prerequisite I remember is going through 6.0.0 from anything earlier.  Looking at my files it looks like I went straight from 6.1.7 to 6.2.3 - I don't even have 6.2.0 (aversion to dot-zero releases).

If you are running pre-v6.x code you have to go to v6.0 first.  From v6.0 you can go to any v6.0.x, v6.1.x or v6.2.x .  However to go to v6.3.x you have to go to v6.2.x first as I recall.  Humm.  Have to double-check that.

Here it is right out of the v6.3 manual.

" Important:

There is no upgrade path from any agent software release earlier than 6.2 to Software
Release 6.3. Devices running older agent software must first be upgraded to a version of
Software Release 6.2 before upgrading to Software Release 6.3. Note that the diagnostic
software running on the device should not be earlier than 6.0.0.15."

We have 40+ stacks all converted over to FW:6.0.0.18  SW:v6.3.2.010 BN:10 (c) Avaya Networks.
They are performing very well and so far we have had no issues with the edge connections. We run SMLT to all our edge stacks and have up to 6 units stacked. The upgrade was totally painless however I do miss the JDM since you can't manage the 6.0.0.18 versions with it but have to use the web interface.

I've got a stack of 5510/5520's on my desk right now being configured. My upgrade path was 6.0.x to 6.3.3.040, and went from diag 6.0.0.1 to 6.0.0.18 without any issues. Everything has been rock solid without issue.

One was upgraded all the way from 4.0 the other day in about 15 minutes, had I added it to the stack I think it would have updated automatically.
