Wing 5.7.1
« on: May 27, 2015, 10:49:03 AM »
Hi All
well its time to retire the old WS5100 and replace them with the RFS7000, This is just a general question about the RFS7k and Wing 5.7.1, The first thing I have to get around is the location of everything compared to the WS5k v3,3,xx  :-\,  Are people that have these installed finding them Ok and reliable and faster than the Old WS ? Are there any gotya things to watch out for ? The installation we have is pretty basic, 3 WLans and two Vlans, But with the new units we are looking to set the AP650's in there own Vlan and use the captive portal for the guests, And maybe deploying an AP or two in a remote office over a site to site VPN I have looked at the http://blog.michaelfmcnamara.com/2008/10/motorola-rfs-7000-wireless-lan-switch/ done by Michael Mc, but due to the updates in wing version the commands seem to run in different places,
so just getting my head round some of the commands, There  shouldn't be any issues with using the ES3000 to power the AP's ?  I guess I could set the RFS up similar to the WS by having ge1 patched straight into the ES3000 and the ge2 as RON, if anyone can offer any advice / help

I have bad news for you: you waited so long to replace your WS5100 that while you were waiting the RFS7000 became end-of-life :)
You should be researching the NX range of controllers. How many APs do you have?

Not big problem, but Motorola / zebra are still releasing updates, I have installed Wing 5.7.2 which is now un branded

But I have a question, when the units were updated it installs loads of profiles for different AP's and RFS units, I have removed all the profiles except the ones fro the RFS7000 and the AP650's

when you go into operations / Device upgrade I can see the 2 RFS7k and 4 AP650, two of them have upgraded to 5.7.2.0-088R and the other two are at 5.2.1.0-021R & 5.2.0-069R, So I have selected these and then select upgrade firmware when you look in upgrade status it show the AP, but I get " Update error: Bad File,Failure in tar.tar: invalid tar magic "

Not sure why this is - any help.

Also I have another issue with the flash, in the event log I have the following message
"free Flash: file system space, 0.0% is less than 90.0% "

As I'm only using these as test units at present, is there a way to clear the unit/s down so I can start again ? I know removing the startup-config is like a default but it does not clear the flash down.

If you go to operation file management, then into flash Log and then try to delete any of the files it errors with file is read only.

Any Help please :'(

On 2 of your APs the firmware is too old to be directly updated to 5.7. First update them to an intermediary version , then to 5.7. Check the release notes for the exact versions but I think 5.2 to 5.4.4 then to 5.7.x should be a safe bet.

Regarding the flash,  you can use the command 'device-upgrade' to remove unnecessary firmware files e.g. firmware for other RFS models

Its all gone wrong :'(

installed v5.4 to the second partition and booted it, the AP's look as if they were updated to 5.4 from 5.2.
so far so good

set boot to primary partition - then could not access the RFS, so as these are not in use at present, I set them back to default, and set the IP on the units.

this is a flat network L2
the first thing I did was to try and set the cluster up, but it will not see the second unit

tried it via the cli join cluster-member xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx user admin password
this returns with election in progress

The RFS units have Ge1 connected to the main network ( vlan1 ) tagged as native and set as a trunk port

Ge2 ( assigned vlan 2100 ) is connected to an ES3000 ( POE Switch ) with 9 AP650 hanging off it. there are no Vlans on this
although it can

This is how I had it setup before but now it will not work, before it would see the AP's now it will not.
vlan 2100 has an ip of 10.1.1.104 & 105 cluster vlan is 2100 master priority on the main unit is set at 200 and the backup as 199, but I know when the cluster works it sets it all to the same as the master
Heeeelllllp

Can you attach your config here? First get the APs working then do the cluster.

Can the RFS see the APs as mint neighbours? What is the output of show mint neighbour, show adoption status, show adoption info, show wireless ap , show wireless ap configured.

I don't know what is going Off now, the AP's are on the network then off the network,

it is doing my head in,

If You could have a look at my config McNutty and help me understand where I'm going wrong ? please

this is a flat network,
VLAN 1 is the main LAN
VALN10 routes to an ADSL router
and VLAN2100 is just for the AP's ( power for these is supplied by an es3000 ) AP's are the only thing plugged into the ES3000.

There are two RFS7000 working in an active / standby configuration, with only 9 AP650's
if you reload the primary unit the secondary one seems to adopt quite quickly, but then they go offline and it seems to take an age for the secondary unit to re-adopt them again.

I'm stuck it sort of works but not reliably,
With the default Config for the RFS7000 do I need to copy the default one and call it Primary and also one for secondary ?

like wise for the AP650's ?

This is a basic setup nothing complicated

Well confused now :'( the wireless seemed to be working fine all day, then at about 730pm the RFS / wireless just blatted the network, causing the clusters to fallover and killed the VPN,

there is obviously something I have done wrong in the config or something, I'm stuck :(

looking at the config I see that AP1-PC01 has a default-gate way xxx.xxx.xxx .254 but the other have a 10.x.x.x.

Hi, there are several things in your config which could be causing issues for you.
For one thing, you have conflicting information for the cluster to form over both  IP and VLAN. You should pick only one method.

Do you have a network diagram showing the relationship between the RFS subnet 172. and the AP650 subnet 10. including the switches and routers? Is Everything on the same site?
What type of support did you purchase with your RFS? The support guys could assist you to get this going.

Hi
The AP's should all be in the 172 range, don't know where some of them are picking up the 10. rangeI have no support for the RFS its a second user unit, I was trying to move from a ws5100 to rfs 7K. I thought if I set ge2 up similar to the ws51k vlan 2100 then set the AP's to use vlan 2100, Give ge 2 a network address 10.1.1.105/24 on the rfs. then set ge1 as RON with a 172 range  then setup port as a trunk port with vlan 1 tagged as native, and then in the allowed vlan add 10 ( 1, 10 )
so ge1 have vlan 1 & 10 and its a trunk port
ge2 has vlan2100 assigned to it as Access.
The AP's are all on the same site, L2 network into Nortel ( Avaya) 5510 units

I have read that its not good to set up ge2 and all traffic should go via one connection, so I set all the AP's to VLAN1 and disabled ge2, there was no issue on the network allday then at about 7is it started to cause problems, to the point the RFS units were disconnected from the LAN,

See here you have multiple adjacencies

4D.17.0E.84 (AP6-LR-TR) at level 1, 2 adjacencies, 2 UP adjacencies, best adjacency vlan-1
70.38.0A.F9 (Backup-RFS) at level 1, 3 adjacencies, 3 UP adjacencies, best adjacency vlan-1

But your APs are on the same L2 broadacast domain as the RFS? And adopted by VLAN method.
So you might have a loop here.

What is the output from 'show mint neigh detail' ?

Also, what is output from 'show log' at 7:30 when it stopped working?

What A Night  :'(

It looks like the AP650's had retained the old default gateway, changed the to the DGW in vlan 1

Also when wireshark was run , it filled a 1.5GB buffer VVfast with MINT protocol Broadcasts, the RFS7K were pulled off the network,

-----------------Changes made -----------------------------
RFS7K
ge1 set to trunk port with VLAN1 set as native then in vlans a new vlan was added ( 10 ) so on ge1 it has allowed valns 1,10

ge2/3/4 all shut down

On the Ap650,s  they have ge1/vlan 1
under adoption
group2
controller vlan ( unticked )

the APs all connect to an ES3000 all ports vlan1 with 1 port into the main network

____________________________________
the RF is up and working, but Im concerned that the MINT Broadcast may start again.
this is the
rimary-RFS#sh mint neighbors
10 mint neighbors of 70.81.BE.8E:
0B.A4.1D.B8 (AP5-B4-FF-A610) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
0B.A4.DC.E0 (AP3-RECEP) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
0B.A6.8C.78 (AP4-ICTDept) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
19.21.7E.54 (AP2-PC02) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
19.A2.09.28 (AP7) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
19.A2.09.3C (AP8) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
19.F4.F3.BC (AP1-PC01) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
4D.17.0E.38 (AP9) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
4D.17.0E.84 (AP6-LR-TR) at level 1, best adjacency vlan-1
70.38.0A.F9 (Backup-RFS) at level 1, 2 adjacencies, 2 UP adjacencies, best adjacency vlan-1

is this last item correct as there are two RFS7k units ?

which is different to the first time I ran this all aps showing 2 adjacencies

0B.A4.1D.B8 (AP5-B4-FF-A610) at level 1, 2 adjacencies, 2 UP adjacencies, best adjacency vlan-1

Do I need to do anything with the MINT setup to stop the broadcasts
ie. setup a new VLAN just for mint Traffic ? could this go over ge2 ( switch to switch direct ) ? currently there is no settings in the MINT setup

Thanks for looking and advice :)

when I run show mint neighbors on the backup unit is shows

0 mint neighbors of 70.38.0A.F9:

then on the Primary unit it shows

when I look in the GUI on the standby unit, under cluster it has the cluster name

Cluster members
Cluster vlan1
Then the two ip addresses of the units and routing level 1

Adoption

auto provisioning - No
no policy
learn and save network config is ticked
all the above is the same on the Active / Standby switches

When you look in device / dashboard on the primary unit it show that there are 3 devices online ( itself and 2 AP's )

The standby unit just shows itself - and reports the other units are offline
when the active unit is reloaded the standby unit is not adopting the 2 AP's
