Upgrade to WiNG 5.8
« on: October 06, 2015, 05:15:41 PM »
Has anyone upgraded to WiNG 5.8 and did you have any issues?

Relatively new to my environment and WiNG and the manager has said he wants to upgrade our RFS7000 and APs to v5.8. He asked me to look into this. I am not finding many resources for an upgrade.

We currently have AP7181 mesh WAN in the field, but found out this week they are going end of life. In order to bring in the "replacements" we need to have everything upgraded. The manager mentioned upgrading the RFS first and then pushing out the upgrade to the radios.

Does anyone have any insight or other resources they could point me at?

Thank you!

It would make more sense for me to upgrade the furthest MESH APs first, then the Mesh Roots after that.
Look for a document called "How To MESHConnex" (or something like that). This describes the upgrade process.

How many MESH APs are you running? Are they easy to access in case of issues with the firmware update?
You didn't mention what version you are currently running, so maybe 5.8 is not the best option for you.

Upgrade controller (s) first

Then load an image for 7181s (generic 71xx image)

Then upgrade your Non-Roots towards 5.8 using the command device-upgrade rf-domain <name> containing <part of the hostname that is common among non-roots). Don't forget to add "no-reboot" option to be able to manually reboot all APs at once. You probably want to control when the reboot will happen

After push the image to the rest of the APs using device-upgrade

Check this document attached

Ah yes, important info... Running 5.5 currently and all the APs are on the same version as the controller. We have about 180 APs deployed throughout the county. I will look for that document.

Just as an update, I reached out to Zebra/Motorola and they actually said not to upgrade to 5.8 with my configuration and stick to the more stable 5.7.2. Still waiting for a bit of clarification from them as to whether we can upgrade the controller and keep visibility into the APs that we don't upgrade in the test round.
