Help ! With Motorola WS5100
« on: July 07, 2015, 09:42:34 AM »
Hi to all !

I bought a used Motorola WS5100 and I am having problems accessing CLI.

I used the factory null modem cable with telnet, I put the settings as instructed 19200/8/1/none/no control and tried to connect but I don't get anything on the telnet screen.

The lights of the WS5100 are both Stable Blue.

I tried my null modem cable and telnet application on another WS5100 unit that I have and it works fine.

I tried to connect with ethernet (first tried to scan for static IP on different networks, next used DHCP server to assign dynamic IP to switch) it didn't work...

Can anyone suggest what to do ??

How can I access this WS5100 ?

Thanks !!

I also noticed that when I connect the ethernet cable, even though the lights look normal on my laptop, the both ethernet ports show no lights (on my other WS5100 the green light flashes when ethernet cable connected)

Try some different serial baud rates as different FW versions might have different settings, or someone may have changed the speed

Thanks for your reply !!

I noticed the following :

It appears that the switch is not booting properly.
I reboot a another WS5100 and the sequence is 1) the lights should flash red 2) then solid blue for 2-3 seconds (this is the point where the problematic unit is stuck) , 3) they should blink yellow and 4) finally solid blue.

So it appears that my unit is stuck in blue before completing the boot sequence...

Any ideas ???

Thanks for your suggestions and the link you provided !!

On start-up the lights go in all colors in rotation and then they become Solid Blue.

The problem is that both ethernet and console port are not responding.

Another WS5100 that I have after going through all colors in rotation, they become Solid Blue for a few seconds then blink yellow and finally Solid Blue.

So I am missing the second part of the startup sequence...

This makes the unit non-responsive to the Console Port at any Baud settings...

Any ideas ?

Seem strange that the console port is not responding, does the console cable work fine on the other Ws5xxx you have ?

if it does its not the cable, If you connect the 9way to the front of the WS, power the switch off, then power on then in the hyper-terminal or terra term you should get something on the screen, press esc, let me know if you get anything  the serial ports settings should be

Data Rate 19.2kbps
data bits 8
Parity None
stop bits 1
flow control None

first request

username: CLI

then second response
userid:admin
password:symbol

if you want to restore the default password
@ the userid : admin
@ password: restore_default_password

these are notes I made which may be a bit out of date, & I don't know what FW level the unit is ?

there are 3 light states on the ws
solid, blinking or off

blue/amber/red

if you have RED LED the DOM id probably at fault
