Error setting country of operation
« on: May 19, 2013, 06:29:31 PM »
Hello everybody!

I've 2 x RFS6010 and 36 x AP-0650-66030-WW. Software version is 5.4.2.0-030R. Country is Russia - this is important.
Whole system worked good with "ru" as country of rf-domain ~1 month. After scheduled power outage I found whole system with all radios in Off state. All access points reported following: "Country-code         : not-set".
If I change country of rf-domain to some EU country (I've tried DE and CZ) whole system start to work. If I change country to RU, all access points reports error: "%DOT11-1-COUNTRY_CODE_ERROR: Error setting country of operation. ru [Russia] not supported on hardware model AP-0650-66030-WW" and disables radios.

Do you have any ideas what's going on and why it worked before ? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Below is version of my access points:

AP650 version 5.4.2.0-030R

Booted from secondary

ap650-6-1 uptime is 21 days, 12 hours 42 minutes
CPU is MIPS 24Kc V7.4
Base ethernet MAC address is xxxxxxx
System serial number is xxxxxxx
Model number is AP-0650-66030-WW (EU)
Radio HAL version is 92 (DFS:73)

Update:
When I turn on new AP-650 and do not adopt it on controller, I see other Model number on it:

Model number is AP-0650-66030-WW

I can set RU country on this access point. If I set country CZ on this access point, Model number is changing to:

Model number is AP-0650-66030-WW (EU)

After this change I can't set RU country anymore even after removing all configs and power off access point.
Does anybody know how to change Model number back to AP-0650-66030-WW ?

Thanks,
Sergey

login:
username: reset
password: FactoryDefault

Hi all,

first of all the reset to factory defaults is only working through the serial port (which is not available
on the AP650/AP6532). It will not work through telnet or ssh.

Furthermore you are stucked due to the new EU regulatory demands.
If you set once the country code to one of the EU you are not allowed to change it to a country
outside the EU anymore.

There is one trick you may try, which is downgrading all components to WiNG 5.2.x,
set the country to RU and then upgrade everything back to WiNG 5.4.2.

If this will not help, only the Motorola support is able to change the country...

Thank you for reply!

Yes, I'm going to downgrade to the 5.2.x version. However I still think how to do it easier. I would not like to downgrade whole infrastructure including RFS6010 but I don't have firmware 5.2.x for AP650. Only for RFS6010...

Also I see socket JP1 on the AP-650 and I hope it is serial console. I'll try to check signal levels there and I plan to connect serial. However I don't sure can I revert my access points back even through serial console.

The JP1 port on the AP650 is not a serial port.
You will need a MAX232 to convert the TTL signals to RS232 signal level.

Furthermore the reset of the AP650 will not help you. The problem will persist.

There is no need for a standalone AP650 firmware as it is part of the controller firmware.
So downgrade your controller to firmware 5.2, let all the AP's adopt and the controller will downgrade
them to 5.2. too.
When all AP's are downgraded, change your country code and upgrade to 5.4.2 again.

Ok, I'll try to downgrade first.

I don't understood about JP1. Is it not serial console ? Or it's serial console but with TTL signal levels ?
I have FTDI USB<-> RS232 TTL converter and I plan to use it if JP1 is serial console. Maybe I can reset something during boot process.

No chance to get rid of the problem with a reset to factory defaults...
JP1 is a serial console port, but with TTL signals.
Your USB to RS232 adapter will not help...

Ok. I'll try to downgrade one AP to 5.2.61 right now and see can I change country or not.
Anyway no any documents with a warning "do not change country of your rf-domain, because it's not revertable". :-(

If you look into the WiNG 5.4.0 Release Notes you will find the country code problem described...

I downgraded to 5.2.1 changed country to RU and all access points started to work.
I've upgraded to 5.4.2 and all access points switched off radios again. So (EU) information still persists even after downgrade.

It's so bad. I bought access points with suffix -WW (World Wide) and I can't use them in most countries.

I've got serial console to AP650. Is there any option to reset EU restriction ?
I don't see any EU specific info in environment variables:

lcap> printenv
bootcmd=bootx
bootdelay=1
baudrate=115200
ipaddr=192.168.1.50
serverip=192.168.1.100
gatewayip=192.168.1.1
netmask=255.255.255.0
mem=96M
mfg_hardware_type=lcap
ethact=eth0
mfg_rtc_calibration=-8
ethaddr=xxxxxxxxxxx
mfg_serial_number=xxxxxxx
mfg_date=2012/12/03
mfg_country_code=WW
mfg_hardware_model=AP-0650-66030-WW
mfg_hardware_version=D
stdin=serial
stdout=serial
stderr=serial

Environment size: 394/65532 bytes

Hm,

I'm wondering that the downgrade to WiNG 5.2.1 was not helpful as this "trick" worked already for someone else.
There is the option to flash the whole AP from scratch, but you need a special firmware file and a secret password to enter the programming mode.

Next idea would be to downgrade all AP650 to WiNG 4 and then back to 5.4.2 (this may take 30 - 40 minutes).
This will do the whole re-programming of the AP like the reflash option described above.
