AP650 Radio rates issue
« on: October 29, 2013, 08:48:50 AM »
Hi again
After upgrade to WiNG 5.4.4 i discovered one weird thing .. all our AP650 operate just on 802.11a and 802.11bg not at 802.11an and 802.11bgn as in other locations. Configuration is same, four wlans from no-encryption to eap-ccmp have same issue with that. On good location i found this detail for example:

Radio: X:R2, alias X-AP2:R2
 STATE                : On
 PHY INFO             : Bssid: X RF-Mode: 5GHz-wlan
ACCESS POINT         : Name: X-AP2  Location: X  Placement: Indoor
CHANNEL              : Current: 36 Configured: smt Width: 20MHz
 TRANSMIT POWER       : 15 dBm
 ANTENNA USAGE        : 2x3
MAXIMUM DATA RATES   : Phy: 300 Mbps User: 225 Mbps
PHY SETTINGS         : Short Preamble: N Dual Channel: N Spectrum Mgmt: N
 RATE SELECTION       : standard
 ANTENNA DOWNTILT     : Not-Supported
 ERP COEXISTENCE      : ERP Protection: N Non-ERP detected: N Non-ERP associated: N
 HT COEXISTENCE       : HT Protection: no-protection, Non-HT detected: Y
Current Channel Width: 20Mhz, as configured
 Num of Mcast Streams : 0 (max:25)
 Multicast streams    :

     BSS-2            : X2* (*=primary)
     BSS-3            : X3* (*=primary)
     BSS-4            : X4* (*=primary)
     Shutdown WLANs   :
 MESHPOINT map        :
 BSS MAP              :
     BSS-1            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 mcs0-15
     BSS-2            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 mcs0-15
     BSS-3            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 mcs0-15

                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 mcs0-15

And on weird location i have:

Radio: X:R2, alias ap650-X:R2
 STATE                : On
 PHY INFO             : Bssid: X RF-Mode: 5GHz-wlan
ACCESS POINT         : Name: ap650-X  Location: X  Placement: Indoor

     BSS-3            : X3* (*=primary)
     BSS-4            : X4* (*=primary)
     Shutdown WLANs   :
 MESHPOINT map        :
 BSS MAP              :
     BSS-1            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54
     BSS-2            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54
     BSS-3            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54
     BSS-4            : basic-rates    = 6 12 24
                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54

Both locations are in EU (changing country code didn't changed anything) both have same configuration, same firmware, same AP650 version and controller. Only one diference is that weird location was before on WiNG 4.4. Any suggestion how to fix it?

P.S: For sure I tried change rates manualy, change channel width to 40MHz, change RF smart configuration, radio configuration, wlan configuration and everything what i found and still same issue.

Hi Jakub,

can you please share us your current config please?
Also how did you upgrade from 4.4.x to 5.4.4? Directly jumped? for 650s you should do 2-step upgrade in this case, I saw many weird stuff happening when you skip 5.2.x or 5.3.x versions for ap650..

still PHY shows that you have 300Mbps max rates on both radio's

I did direct update to WiNG5.4.4 but its not just on AP650 but also on our outdoor AP7161 so i think that its something in configuration ... now i downgraded it to WiNG 5.3.1 and seems to be almost same (I also cleared all smart-rf configs etc.):

                      : supported-rates= 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54

And yes its there 300Mbps on radio but all client get max 54Mbps

Hi Jakub,

you can reach 300Mbit with WPA2/CCMP only. All other encyptions (TKIP) support only 54Mbit.

Well
On WiNG4 we reached 300Mbit also with non-ecrypted X4 wlan. And also X1 and X2 are wep128 .. i am not sure what is max for it... but i think that it was more then just 54Mbit. Definitely on eap-ccmp (X3) we had 300Mbit.

Update: I did some testing .. downgrade RFS to 4.4.0 with one AP 650. X1 connected with 180-240Mbit X2 and X3 connected with 54Mbit and X4 connected with 180-240Mbit, then upgrade to WiNG 5.3.1 and again all is 54Mbit .. :(

Update2: Omfg i found it .. it was weird configuration on wlan QoS policy when default was normal and not WMM .. when I change it to WMM then it go up to 130Mbit .. now i need to find how to enable 40MHz channel width ..

I see you have smartrf policy there. I would i) disable all DFS channels with high CAC time, ii) in smartrf there is parameter "channel-width 5GHz 40mhz". If you want to go via static assignments, then specify a channel and add either one upper adjacent channel or lower under radio settings:
channnel 36+

Thnx
I set up channel manualy to X+ and now it works fine.

But another issue found  :P
On one location from Poland i can't set up channel higher then 48

what is really weird, also on other counties I see same regulation .. but for US i see much more, but RFS and AP are WR model.

ETSI compliant DFS channels were added from 5.4.2, if Im not mistaken. Anyway, this is what I see on 5.4.4:
