Adopted Device Upgrade - Fails
« on: January 14, 2015, 04:57:14 PM »
We have about 300 autonmous APs that I would like to adopt to a VX9000 controller.  The controller has the 5.6.1 code on it (APs are at 5.4.x).  I've been slowly logging into each AP's GUI, and setting up the controller IP address.  When I do this, the AP is adopted into the VX9000.  The config status says "version-mismatch".  These APs are all over the world, with layer 3 connections back to the data center that the VX9000 resides in.  When I go to the operations, adopted device upgrade tab, and kick off an upgrade on an AP (doesn't matter which), the upgrade retries three times, and then fails.  I do go into the Cisco router, and see the communication happening, so I know it's not a routing issue.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  I really appreciate it.

Can you give us some details please? Like running config for a start. If you have 300 APs, I would also ask if they are adopting over mint level 1 or level 2. Can you post the output from "show mint links details", "show global domain managers", "show device-upgrade status" from the VX?

Hi, if the APs are using firmware before 5.4.0, please upgrade the firmware to 5.4.0 first (I suggest 5.4.4), and then it will upgrade to 5.6.1 automatically.

you can upload the firmware 5.4.4 to VX9000, after all APs are upgraded to 5.4.4 then upload firmware to 5.6.1, then they will all upgrade to 5.6.1 and adopted by the WLC automatically.
