Juniper WLC Bandwidth Fairness
« on: February 07, 2013, 04:23:34 PM »

I was wondering if anyone is employing bandwidth shaping/QoS/fairness on the Juniper WLC's? We're in an educational environment and the wireless network is gradually moving from "best-effort" to "should-always-just-work". I've been looking through the QoS chapters in the different manuals but I just can't seem to find what I want. It might just be me ofcourse :), I'm just recently trying to wrap my head around this wireless QoS stuff. The problem is that sometimes the occasional heavy users are hurting the wireless experience for other users on the same AP. So would it be technically possible to configure some sort of fairness in such a way that every user can enjoy the full bandwidth, if the airtime is available, but when congestion occurs the heavy users are given less bandwidth in favor of the other users or maybe every user is given a certain minimum bandwidth. The end result being that everyone can enjoy a "normal" wireless experience.

Juniper LWAN allows to configure acces time weights which allows your to offer a fair airness use to all of your radios and SSID's. This should enforce all users on different radios or SSID's can get sufficient amount of tranceiving.
Another option is to limit the bandwidth per second for your heavy users after they have tranceived a specific amount of data (1GB for example).
As it seems you would like to offer this on a per user based method, you should look into using QOS. It will take you some time to configure, but you will be able to deifne airtime per user and per application.
This PDF document gives a good description on how to configure this (page 809-828):

I'm using DSCP on my clients to ensure specific applications get the needed bandwidth in times when the load is heavy. Also I'm using the Juniper Voice module which automatically detects SIP traffic and prioritizes this traffic for all clients, regardless if they are QOS capable/configured.

Hi everyone, is there a way to limit bandwidth per user? Make sure no single client can use more than XMb of traffic?

As far as I know it is not possible to configer a bandwidth limit per user. There are techniques to configure airtime fairness but not on a per user base.
The only way to accomplish this using Juniper gear is with smartpass. You will need the advanced license which allows you to configure a maximum limit and/or allow dynamic changes on a per session base.
