PXE/tftp provisioning
« on: February 19, 2019, 07:22:14 PM »

so far we only deployed 4 juniper EX switches, and did it manually. It was at least a bit painful for various reasons.
Basically, they have so many features that "normal" use cases become edge cases.
I swore to myself if we ever work with them again, we need to at least make good use of the advanced management features to save some time.

I could imagine i.e. using the automatic network configuration using pxe/tftp to be dropping in all the basic configuration, plus for example all VLANs & network settings a specific customer needs. Then we could do that at our office and just ship over a replacement or extension, whatever they need. And keep a pile of 2-3 ready at all the time. I'd probably even include that in the OS upgrade procedure.

I'd like to know if one of you already has experiences with pre-configuring them.
And if they're good experiences ;-)

Sorry, no I have never bothered with the pre-configuration method of programming them.  Typically I send them out with a base config on them, enough to get them on the wire.  After that I connect to them and finish the config as it's needed.
