Self Healing Fiber Optic Ring
« on: July 31, 2013, 03:25:05 PM »
Hi,

I have a project where a SHR is required and I am unsure of what type of equipment we should be using. Normally we use a very basic topology to connect our Ethernet devices. I thought that using managed switches with a couple fiber modules and RSTP enabled and of course the fiber ring itself that the switches would do the same with the fiber as they would with CAT5/6.

One of the people I work with thinks we need specialized equipment (black box’s) that handle the SHR and then we connect those to our CAT6 switch.

I have searched the web and was not successful in finding a clear answer. Any help or direction would be much appreciated. I hope that this an appropriate forum to post this question to.

Thanks for your time,
Seamus

I received an answer on another forum.

Ethernet is ethenet, whether it's over fiber or copper it doesn't matter so STP can be used to create a self healing ring. No special equipment required.
