NOOB question on IGMP and switch testing and verification
« on: January 06, 2015, 05:57:21 PM »
this is sort of a general question not so much about cisco specifically,

I am a new to IGMP and trying to figure it out , I have a switch that supports IGMP and I need to verify said switchs impementation v1,2,3 works I was thinking of using python and scapy but once i hav the ports set up for IGMP what do i do

can i add them to different static IGMP groups then try and send IGMP packets to those groups and sniff with tcpdump for those packets on the egress of said port?

sorry if this is a uninformed question still googling and trying to understand the whole IGMP realm

Hi merrittr,

I think I used 'Multicast Hammer' tool to test IGMP which may help you in your testing?

looks like its a piece of Nortel freeware ... having problems locating it on the net do you still have it can you make it available?

P.S. as a lasting reminder before all the good technology was sold off or stolen I was present this :) see attached photo

Hi Rob M,

I don't have the tool anymore but I also remember that Michael did a blog on multicast testing using a different tool.  Check out:
