Limit bandwidth to DHCP clients.
« on: April 19, 2016, 04:01:40 PM »
Hi all,
I'm working on an installation where we'll have say 300mbps or less incoming from ISP. Outdoor Wi-Fi access points will be connected via ethernet either directly to router or through a switch. PoE can probably be handled with PoE injectors.

What I need to do is divvy up that 300mbps to each DHCP client such that no DHCP client can exceed some bandwidth limit that we determine through testing.

Looking for equipment options.

Do what we did with our Visitor Wireless (Children's Hospital).  Limited the connection rate at the AP level.  In our case, we limited it to 'G' only, 54Mbit.  Since we have kids that stay for long periods of time and stream movies, this was the easiest way to ensure no one visitor took down the connection.  We average 80% utilization of our 100Mbit pipe with this configuration and a BlueCoat proxy in the middle filtering the sites.  We also average 1600 devices on our Visitor Wi-Fi at any one time.
