CFM packets ..what do they do?
« on: February 06, 2015, 11:58:38 AM »
Hi again all ...I hate spamming this forum with so many questions ..here is another

I am trying to test how a switch handles 802.1ag I have enabled it

ehernet cfm enable
ethernet cfm traceroute cache

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/12-2/53SG/configuration/config/E_OAM.html#wp1136255

what i need to figure out or have the forum inform me of is if I run etherping with the MAC of a interface  on a device on the other side of the switch i configured for CFM why would the cfm packets hit the configured switches interface and be dropped?

I mirror the ingress port and see the packets there see attached image

since these are control messages once a switch is configured for CFM should it not just pass the packets through if not for its domain since they might contain information about network failures and rerouting ?
