Nortel Meridian Option 11c Expect Script
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:33:17 PM »
Hello All/ Mr Michael,

I was just browsing the net for a problem of mine and came across your little but most interesting site here.

My problem is the following: I am needed to do a demonstration using RANCID to backup networking devices such as routers, switches etc. and from what I've been reading, RANCID's scripts only support Cisco, Juniper, HP and some other networking devices.

Now, I've also been reading that RANCID uses Expect scripts, which I've seen you are quite familiar with.

The thing is that I am a novice level 1 admin on Nortel Meridian switches and was considering doing this on an OPTION 11C Mini system, since this is all I have at my disposal right now, but these use modem dial-up connections for remote login..no SSH or Telnet option here like for the CS1K... but I've also been reading that people are able to write Expect scripts to connect via modem to remote devices.  :-\

I've also seen that you had a script for a NORTEL CS1K, just getting the time and date and I was wondering if you could share some light here on the following: would it be able to write an Expect script to login remotely to my Meridian system and do some basic LD stuff on it?
Since this is for a very important school project of mine, actually my Batchelor's diploma, I would really appreciate any help here.

Best Regards,

Negru Tudor Adrian

Hi Negru Tudor Adrian and welcome to the forums!

You'll find that a lot of telecom folks have written a lot of scripts with ProComm Plus (terminal emulation software) on Windows although you can certainly use Expect on a Linux workstation/server.

I haven't used either of these in years now so I can't really offer you much help beyond the suggestion of searching Google.

Good Luck!
