Multiple VLAN on Avaya SIP 1120E ethernet port
« on: August 22, 2011, 03:23:42 PM »
I would like to know if IP PHONE 1120E built-in swith is trunk and if i can use multiple vlan through it. I haven't tested yet, but i plan to put a small external switch to the phone ethernet port and try to use a PC VLAN, Printers VLAN etc...

I'm working in an hospital. In lots on place, we only have 1 network jack available, and installing more is a difficult task because of infection control . So i would like to know if i plug the IP Phone in the network jack, can i use a small swith behind the phone to use other devices and if VLAN's can be use. For example, a PC in VLAN1, a printer in VLAN5, the phone itself is in VLAN100, even a H323 videoconference device on VLAN800.

Thanks.

Eric,

Why not just connected the "small" switch into the wall jack and hang your devices off the "small" switch?

Also the "small" switch will also have 802.1Q capabilities or either your devices will have to tag their traffic with proper VLAN ID and the "small" switch will have to honor those 802.1Q tags.

In your proposed scenario, I do believe the 1100 Series phones do preserve the 802.1Q tags, so as long as the "large" switch has all VLANs needed the IP Set will pass the packet with proper Qtag.

Hope this helps.

I thought about that Jon. My problem is that the IP phones are POE. The "small" switch is not.  If i put the swith between the phones and the wall jack, i will have to add power supplies on the phones, which i would like to avoid.

I haven't been able to find precise documentation on the properties of the built-in switch of the 1100 series, nor any other AVAYA "former Nortel" phones. But as you said Jon, if the phone do preserve 802.1Q tags, that would be fine.

Thanks for answering me.

Welcome to the forums EricBouchard,

You could perform a simple test, however, based on the available options I would believe that you can (on the PC port) ether tag a specific VLAN or leave it as an access port (untagged). I would also urge you to consider the QoS implications of hanging multiple devices off the PC port. You might end up with more problems than you started with.

Good Luck!

Thanks.

The phone has a Gig port for connection to a PC….

I know you can have two v-Lans for voice and data, I am not 100 percent sure you will be able to have multiple data V-Lans on the switch side.
