IP1220 and SIP firmware 3.2 - where do I find the language files ?
« on: September 13, 2010, 09:36:05 AM »
Hello,

I'm doing some tests on a Nortel/Avaya IP phone 1220 connected to an Asterisk server. From the 1200 administrator guide (NN43170-601), it seems like these phones support multiples languages. I would like to use this functionality but I can't find these language files on Nortel or Avaya website.

So my question is, where can I find these files ? Note that I don't have any privileged access on Nortel or Avaya website. And here's an except of the documentation, if this can help you helping me :) (p.32):

[LANGUAGE] — simple text files containing all text prompts used by the IP Deskphone.
Language files are used for the localization of the IP Deskphone without software
upgrade. Each language file has a header that contains a software load version with which
this file is associated. Language files are signed by Avaya and are authenticated by the
software for security reasons.

On a different note, it also takes a really long time for my phone to 'log in' (i.e. the time between I enter a username/password and the time the phone actually register to my server). Anyone know how to fix this issue ?

EDIT1: I've find out that the phone tries to do DNS SRV requests to resolve the proxy domain to an IP address even if I put SERVER_IP1_1 configuration line in my DEVICE_CONFIG file. Any way to disable this behavior ? I would like not to be forced to run a DNS server.

EDIT2: Well forget about the 'log in' issue, I've fixed it after resetting the phone. Here's the network parameters I used. I did some tests and it seems like you NEED to put a REAL IP (not 0.0.0.0) in a SERVER_IP1_2 line if you do not want the phone to do DNS SRV requests:

Code: [Select]
SIP_DOMAIN1 192.168.33.3
SERVER_IP1_1 192.168.33.3
SERVER_IP1_2 192.168.33.4
SERVER_PORT1_1 5060
SERVER_RETRIES1 3

According to Nortel/Avaya;

The built-in languages supported by the IP Phone 1210 are:
Arabic, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian,
Japanese (Katakana only), Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish

The built-in languages supported by the IP Phone 1220 and 1230 are:
Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian,
Japanese (Katakana only), Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish

I've never used anything but English so I couldn't tell you anymore than that.

Good Luck!

Well, there's a language option reachable from the phone user interface but the only one I can select (and the only one displayed) is English.

I find it quite hard to work with Nortel/Avaya phones outside of their proprietary system. Documentation is hard to get, and when you get it, it is not that useful because there's too much missing or bogus information.  :(

It can certainly be a challenge at times there's no doubting that. However, Avaya/Nortel has become much better at providing information to their end-users directly as opposed to only sharing that information with their resellers. In the voice market Avaya/Nortel relies very heavy on their resellers.

I'll search around and see what (if anything) additional I can find about the language files for a SIP deployment on a non-Avaya Call Server.

Good Luck!

god, i've looked around a lot for that. here is what you need to download.
from the support.avaya website, look for the 1140 deskphone.
go to download, sip firmware 2.0
historical download.
filename is SIP_1140E_020010.zip
in it, you will find the firmware, along with 2 folders. 020010_Language_Files is the one you want.

i've downloader pretty much every one of them to find it ;)
