How to Configure DHCP for Avaya 6140 Wireless Phones
« on: July 30, 2011, 04:16:54 AM »
HI;

I need to configure Avaya 6140 wireless phones to take DHCP IP from the Windows 2003 Server R2 DHCP server the setup components are Avaya BCM400 4.0, Avaya W2245 Telephony Manager, Cisco Wireless controller with Aironet APs and Avaya 6140 Wireless Phones.

Currently the phones are working on Static IP, when we put the wireless phones on DHCP full / partial it shows "NO SVP IP" message. After contacting avaya support they say to configure
• * DHCP Option 1 – Subnet Mask
• * DHCP Option 3 – Default Gateway
• * DHCP Option 60 – Class Identifier. The wireless handsets use the Class Identifier of “221x-A”. The DHCP server can use the string in the Class Identifier to uniquely identify a wireless handset.
• * DHCP Option 151. This option contains the IP address of the WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245. If Option 151 is not configured, the wireless handset performs a DNS lookup of the name
     “SLNKSVP2”, if Options 6 (DNS Server) and 15 (Domain Name) are configured.

but don't tell how to do it pl. help me how to configure these in the Widows 2003 server R2 as i have not worked more on DHCP server.

The basic idea behind this is when ever the wireless phone user moves from central office to branch offices the DHCP server central / branch will guide the phone to reach the W2245 telephony manager and BCM400 call server of the central office.

If any body can give me step by step config i would be glad.

Thanks
Shreedhar

There is a document from Avaya (formerly Nortel) that can walk you through the steps on the Windows 2003 DHCP server... it's pretty easy. I can't seem to find it right now because the Avaya support website appears to be down. One comment, are you stretching the Layer 2 network that the wireless IP phones connect to across all your branch and office sites? The 2245 needs to be in the same physical Layer 2 network as the wireless IP phones. In my case I have 6 major sites and I have 12 (2 for each site for redundancy) 2245s across my entire network.

Good Luck!

Hi ALL !
Many wifi-systems support 802.11e or WMM (wifi multi media). In this case you dont have to use 2245. You should choise  in QoS-menu handset Wi-Fi Standart option. Using WMM is  simpler and more flexible then using 2245.

Good luck !

Hi Serg;

Can u pl. elaborate more on this so that i can check it out, with WMM will it work directly with the Call server i.e. BCM400 4.0 system.

Michael i would be glad if you can give the path for the document you refered or the document itself or steps if you remember. Also for the class identifier for the W6140 handsets will be "Nortel-61xx-A" or "Nortel- 221x-A" can you help me on this pl.

shreedhars,

you should check your wifi controller documentation. What wifi vendor do you use (Cisco or not) ? It hasnt relation to you Call server. WMM (802.11e) just provide QoS in your wifi network. It exactly the same if you use 2245.

Also for the class identifier for the W6140 handsets will be "Nortel-61xx-A" or "Nortel- 221x-A" can you help me on this pl.
You must use "Nortel-61xx-A"

And here example of my DHCP config (it example for Cisco router):

ip dhcp pool Test_WiFi_IPT
   network 10.207.120.224 255.255.255.240
   default-router 10.207.120.225
   option 66 ascii "10.207.33.114"
   option 151 ascii "10.207.45.6"
   option 60 ascii "Nortel-61xx-A"
   option 128 ascii "Nortel-i2004-A,10.207.128.1:4100,1,7."
