Unable to connect to 1612 fibre switch
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:27:00 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I have a Passport 1612 that has been running fine for about 5 years that I have to program a new Vlan on.
The problem is when I try to console into it I cannot get connected to it just a blank black screen.
It is a fiber switch so I can't connect a patch cable
Management console will not let me connect, I tried with just a Cisco console cable and a patch cable on the management port still nothing. Is there a special management cable?
I inherited this setup so I don't know if there is even a backup of the config.
The switch is sitting in isolation because we changed the sub-net it is on so I can't connect remotely with JDM
I really don't want to reboot it unless I have to because it is routing VOIP and data to about 8 other closets in a hospital like environment and they do not like to see the phones go down in case of emergencies ::)

Any other suggestions
Or am I going to have another early morning reboot before the troops arrive?

The 1612 is different from the 1648. With the 1648 you can manage the switch from any IP interface on the switch. With the 1612 there is management port (on the back) so you could connect your laptop via a crossover cable to the management port and give your laptop an IP address the 1612 expects to see on that port.

To connect to the console, you must use a DB-9 Female to DB-9 Female null modem (crossed) RS-232 cable.

Good Luck!

Hi beentherebefore,

the first step would be to cennect via srial crossover console cable to the switch.
The Mgmt port is a isolated outofband ethernet port (Cisco Srial cable will not work) , that can be configured with a IP interface. You can check the boot.cfg how this port is configured.

more boot.cfg

you should find something like this:

net mgmt ip x.x.x.x/255.255.255.0

You can also plug a RJ45 GBIC to one of the ports and try to connect with a Laptop that is capable of 1000BaseT to that port.

If you have an SW release prior to 2.1 it will look completly different.

Good Luck
Itīs always the network...
