testing ERS4548GT stack interface
« on: September 14, 2011, 08:30:44 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm suspecting problems with the stacking interfaces of a unit in a 4500 stack. I temporalily replaced the unit, but now I have some questions:

Is there a method to check if the stacking interfaces on a switch are working ok?
Is it possible to perform the test when the unit is not in the stack, like connecting a cable from cascade up to cascade down?
Kind regards,

Johan Witters

Hi Johan,

I use the following commands to check my stacks:

show stack health - Status info
show stack-info - Status info
show stack port-statistics - This should show if any packets are being dropped?

You can also check the log to see if there any errors?

CheerZ and good uck

Hi Flintstone,

unfortunately I could not find any strange things in the logs.. At the moment the switch is no longer connected to the stack.

I know Cisco has the possibility to test the stack links, but I can't find any info on Nortel/Avaya
Kind regards,

Hi Johan,

you can also try to enable the Stack Monitor / StackErrorNotification.
If you have a second ERS4500 go to the Lab and test with only one stacking cable. So you can check both ports separtly.

Good Luck
Itīs always the network...

You can check the port statistics on a unit basis, so if there are any errors on the stack links they should show up?

There are a number of ways to test the stack (cascade) ports... some of which require you to take the switch offline.

Good Luck!
