IGMP Logging
« on: November 15, 2011, 09:04:41 PM »
Hi Guys, was hoping someone may be able to assist me on how to enable system logging of IGMP messages using the ACLI on a 5500 series switch?
It is disabled by default (according to the system monitoring manual NN47200-505, 6.03, Dec 2010).  From playing around with the logging command, there's nothing jumping out at me to suggest how I enable IGMP messages like reports, leaves and queries.

Help.

I don't believe that the Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 series has any IGMP logging built into the software. You can use the show ip igmp commands to view the groups and cache, etc.

5520-48T-PWR#show ip igmp ?
Display IGMP information
  cache         Display IGMP cache details
  group         Display IGMP group details
group-ext     Display IGMP extended group details
  interface     Display IGMP interface information
op-mode       Show IGMP HW operational mode
  profile       Display IGMP filter profiles
  router-alert  Display router-alert settings
  snooping      Display IGMP snooping information
  ssm           Display global SSM settings
  ssm-map       Display SSM map/channel settings

Cheers!

Thanks Michael, if your are right then i'm confused as to why this information would be included in the Avaya System Monitoring manual for the 5000 series switches!!! :o

You are referring to this text;

Quote
IGMP and the system event log
IGMP uses the components provided by the syslog tool. The syslog tool performs functions,
such as storing messages in the NVRAM or remote host and displaying these log messages
through the ACLI, console menu, or Telnet.
The IGMP log events can be in one of the following three categories based on their severity:
• Critical
• Serious
• Informational
IGMP logs the messages whenever any of the following types of events occur in the system:
• IGMP initialization
• Configuration changes from the user
• Stack Join events
• IGMP messages: Report, Leave and Query messages received by the switch
Events such as reception of IGMP messages occur frequently in the switch whenever a new
host joins or leaves a group. Logging such messages consumes a large amount of log memory.
Therefore, such messages should not be logged in all the time. By default, such message
logging is disabled. You must enable this feature through the ACLI to view the messages.

I've asked a local Avaya resource and I'll post here what I hear back.

Cheers!

I've heard (unofficially of course) that the option to enable IGMP logging is hidden in the super user menu which is only accessible with the help of Avaya Support.
