ERS 8800 - CPU Switch over
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:58:59 AM »
Hi All,

Recent installation of 8800 with version 7.1.

Switch has 2 CPU´s 8895SF.

Installed and after 2 days Switch switch over from CPU 5 to CPU 6.

Log only says that they switch over but don´t say the reason. No power failure.

What could be the reason to change master cpu when its online?

Switch is  configured with flags for standby..

Thanks

Have you looked at the log files on both CPUs?  Earlier versions of software the log is kept on the PCMCIA card.

From the CLI on the active CPU you can telnet to the inactive one using the command:

peer telnet

The command to look at the bottom of the log file forwards is:

show log file tail

Also look for any other newly-dated files on the flash and PCMCIA cards.  Hardware and sometimes software exceptions are placed in other files.

What specific subversion of 7.1 are you running?

The current version on the Avaya support website is 7.1.1.0.  I'd start with getting there then see if you continue to have issues.

Hi beconnect and welcome to the forums!

As mentioned by @telecom116 you need to verify that the standby CPU/SF is online and running. You can do that by connecting from the primary CPU/SF or you can console up to the CPU/SF from the serial port. You should verify that the CPU/SF is online and running. If it is and you are still having issues, trying resetting (rebooting) the standby CPU/SF.

Are you running in HA mode? If not the switchover will cause an outage. In a non-HA configuration the switch essentially reboots with the standby CPU/SF as the master. A CPU/SF switchover can also be accomplished by just resetting/rebooting the primary CPU/SF although it's important to make sure that the standby is actually online and working.

Good Luck!

We are currently in a rather big upgrading project and when we were really close to deploying 7.1.0.0 our avaya contact called and asked us to upgrade to 7.1.1.0 before deployment because it would fix an important reboot problem.

Could be that your affected by that bug. If I were you I would upgrade to 7.1.1.0. We are currently not experiencing any hickups with 7.1.1.0

Hi All
Both cpu´s running and online with same configs. I can connect via peer telnet fine

HA configured.

cpu switchover only occurs when forced by me or could occur by other issue ?

Switch Only switch over one time,  in the log says cpu switched over to 6 when 5 was the master.

Since this only occurs one time I will expect to see if it arises again

Thanks for or info and help.
