ERS 4500 PoE module update problem
« on: January 11, 2012, 08:37:46 AM »
Hello Ladies & Gentlemen,

I have an issue with ERS 4548GT-PWRs.

While performing Software updates from 5.4.0.3 to 5.5.0.x I tried to update the PoE-Module-Image with the one that avaya has in their downloads to 5.5.x.

First I updated the diag image, then the runtime image to secure and after that reboot the PoE-Module-Image.

The Update fails to program the code and after a reboot the PoE Module fails to load every time. I have basically tried to reprogram the PoE-Module with every image that avaya has on their support site and it just won't program any of them successfully.

The switch that causes the Problem was HW-revision 12. I was able to reproduce it with another ERS 4548GT-PWR that has same HW-revision.

The update works flawlessly on HW-revision 10.

Does anyone of you have any ideas what I have done wrong or how I can get the PoE-Module resetted?

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum,

I would raise a call with Avaya and see if they can help you?

CheerZ and goodluck

Hi Dave and welcome!

I have quite a few ERS 4548GT-PWR switches coming through the door these days but I'm still running 5.3.3 software on them (avoiding EDM until the last possible moment).

Have you essentially bricked the switch?

I've never tried to upgrade the PoE module on either the 5000 or 4000 series switches.

If you haven't already, try downgrading the switch back to 5.4 or 5.3 software (and diag code) and then apply the old PoE image.

As @Flintstone points out you'll probably need to contact Avaya if that doesn't work.

Good Luck!

Hello Michael (first off amazing blog and great forums!),

yeah the Switches are basically bricked. I was able to nicely reproduce it on another 4548GT-PWR with HW-revision 12, but I did not really want to brick more switches just to make the life easier for Avaya Support.

I tried upgrading to v5.6, downgrading to 5.4 and 5.3 and nothing helped.

They work fine after you ruined the PoE image, but they won't do PoE any more so you gotta RMA them.

Avaya is nicely replacing them, too.

Have not had the time to actually contact Avaya support about it, though. Its faster for us to simply RMA them.

We are using v5.5 because of SLPP-Guard (awesome feature).

We have had a lot of troubles lately with some legacy IP-Phones whose internal switches do not forward the STP-BPDUs.

In combination with end users that have the urgent and overwhelming need to make their calls faster by using 2 patchcables on their IP-Phones... ???

Which IP phones are you using? What firmware?

I have about 1,200 (2002,2004,1120e,1140e) IP phones and haven't had any of those issues.

Occasionally we'll see BPDU guard kick in if a user starts messing around...

Cheers!

The Phones that are causing the Problems are Tenovis T3 IPs.

I really do not know the firmware versions and stuff.

They had those tests with STP and those IP-Phones before I started working here...
