Avaya ERS 8600 - Multicast
« on: November 03, 2011, 07:58:21 AM »
Good Morning

Getting conflicting information.

We are running 4.1.8.3 code on our Campus core 8600 switches. Our Application Team have recently installed a FOG server to deal with pushing images to our desktops which are located on our multiple Edge switches. As such we have a requirement to set-up multicast on our 2 x 8600 layer 3 cores and multiple 5520 layer 2 edge switches - typical campus set-up with SMLT uplinks between core and edge switches.

My question is simply; is mulicast a licensed extra to the Base software level on the 8600s? Via DM multicast/DVMRP/PIM are greyed out. In addition I can't see an entry for enabling PIM via the CLI.

Thanks in advance.

Able

Hi

Im running 4.1.8.3 and I have multicast enabled. I followed the procedures outlined in Configuring IP Multicast Routing
Protocols - NN46205-501 314719-D Rev 01. In a nutshell I enabled PIM globaly, set up a static rendevous point and enabled PIM on each of the layer 3 interfaces I needed.

I didnt think that licensing came into play until 5.x.x.

Normski
I'd much rather be hillwalking.

Hi Normski

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I thought the first step would be to enable PIM Globally.

If I try to enable PIM globally using the command "config ip pim enable" I receive the following error;

config ip "pim" not found in path /8600-2:5/config/ip

Am I missing something basic here.

Please confirm the software release and confirm the model of the CPU/SF.

No need for anything but the base license to run basic Multicast although there are caveats to running Multicast in a IST/SMLT environment (see Avaya document below)

Thanks Michael

I have come across the multicast items on you're blog which certainly appears to simplify things, have also been reading up on the Avaya documentation.

The 8600 cores are running release 4.1.8.3
The CPU/SF is: 8692CPU

Cheers

That's really odd.... can you confirm that your boot and agent code are running 4.1.8.3 software?

It should be in the show sys software or a show tech.

Cheers!

Do you use SNMPv1/2 or SNMv3 ?
Some features are only available with SNMPv3 , I am not sure if Multicast is one of it.

Also some features are not visible if you use a JDM that is to old. Wich version of JDM do you use ?

Itīs always the network...

Michael/Dominik

I can confirm that boot and agent code are running 4.1.8.3 on both cores.

We use SNMPv1/2

I have tried versions 6.0.7.0 and 6.2.1.0 of DM - all options associated with Multicast are greyed out.

We are upgrading to version 5.1.6 within the next month due to an ongoing support issue - so will see if this changes anything.
