8691SF and 8692SF in single ERS 8600
« on: August 17, 2011, 11:39:33 PM »
HI Guys,

I have ERS 8600 chassis. Which is running on single 8691SF card. I want to install 2 nos 8692SF card as master and Hot standby but without shutting my ERS chasssis.

Can i install one 8692SF card on secondary slot and copy my running config from 8691SF and then make 8692Sf card as a master?

In short i want to install 8692Sf card in 8691SF card chassis without taking downtime.

Thanks in advance.

regards,
Manoj

Hi Manoj and welcome to the forums!

You can probably stage (load software and configuration, upgrade boot code) the 8692SF in Slot 6 of the switch. However, when you go to cut over to the 8692SF you'll be doing so as a warm standby which essentially resets the switch. Once the switches fails over to the CPU/SF in Slot 6 you can place the second 8692SF in slot 5 and enable HA mode.

That would be my guess but let's see what anyone else has to say.

Cheers!

While in theory it is possible to have an 8691 run HA to a 8692.  (Not supported but could be done).

You did mentioned that you are currently running on a single 8691 so I think it would be fair to say that HA is not currently enable on the switch.  Which means that even if you were to insert the new 8692 in your switch, you would need to reset the active SF to enter in HA mode.

You never mentioned what version of code you were running but just the same if I was looking at replacing the SFs on a switch (not because of a failure). I think I would approach it during a scheduled maintenance window during a quiet time of the day (or night).

Prepare the new Switch Fabbric with the correct code and configs (boot and config) then reset the switch and allow it to come up on the new Switch Fabric.  If the prep work is done correctly it should not take more than a few minutes.

Cheers
