5510 FW upgrade
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:12:08 AM »
Hello all

I have to upgrade our Avaya/nortel 5510/48 switches from FW 6.0.0.6 SW: 6.0.0.005 to 6.0015 diags and 6.2.4.010.img

I would like to know if anyone has done this, There are VLANs setup and the switches are stacked, we are not IP routing, I plan to take a backup of each switch just in case,

Is the IP routing on by default ? I have looked for the command to disable it but I cant find it.

can someone post the command if there is one.

copy running-config ftp " or " copy running-config tftp will this get the file off the switch ?

and should this put it back on the switch ?

copy ftp running-config " or " copy tftp running-config "

any help would be great & thanks for looking

Make sure to read the documentation and release notes...

No problem with upgrading from 6.0 to 6.2.

If you assign IP interface to VLANs then local routing will occur if the following command is run:

Code: [Select]
conf t
ip routing

or to disable

Code: [Select]
conf t
no ip routing

copy running-config ftp " or " copy running-config tftp will this get the file off the switch ?

and should this put it back on the switch ?

copy ftp running-config " or " copy tftp running-config "

To back up the configuration run the following commands. the configuration will not be lost during the upgrade but always best practice to backup config.

For ASCII Config
Code: [Select]
copy running-config tftp address A.B.C.D filename backup_config.cfg
For Binary Config
Code: [Select]
copy config tftp address A.B.C.D filename backup_config_binary.cfg
Good Luck.

Hi John
Upgraded 4 x 6 stacks over the weekend and all went well, just one issue with one unit where it show the status light flashing no stackup/down but working, the other units in the stack can see up and down, unit rebooted ( reset) still the same. :)

For the one stack that has the unit with the status light flashing, have you tried rebooting the entire stack? and bringing up the Base unit first and then each other unit in succession? Just an idea, If that doesnt work, i would open a ticket with avaya support.

Will have to wait now until the next maintanence period in march, I think I will remove the offending unit from the stack and reload the firmware, it looks like a non-fatal error - what ever that means :-\

Does anyone know of a command to stop the timout of the RO/RW passwords or how to remove past used passwords ? :-?

Slightly off topic,
I have to swop a faulty unit out of a stack of 3 units. The base is doing strange things, the repalcement unit is at the same FW/SW level as the others in the stack, so as it is at the moment one of the other units is acting as temp base.

If I power down the faulty base unit and install the new base, will the config be pushed to the new base or will the blank config of the replacement unit push a blank config to the other units ?

the AUR is enabled :)

The stack was very sensitive due to casecade cable/modules. i think you should turn off power of all the units and turn one unit at the time and see which one is bad.

cheers...

I know Which one has a problem, its the one that has powered itself off for no reason maybe a power supply problem. My question was to do with the config if you power off the base and one of the other units becomes the temp base, will a new base with no config get the config from the temp base ? or will the other units get the config from the new base i.e nothing as it has no config ?

This has been discussed many many times before... please look at the following threads for the background information. If you still have questions after that then please post back here.

Hi all,

regarding to the "blinking status led" issue: this could be caused by one unit not receiving the diag/agent from the stack. I had the same issue once: I upgraded a stack of 6 units and rebooted the lot, only to find out unit 6 not to come online.. Stack leds off and status led blinking.  I disconnected the unit from the stack, manually uploaded the correct diag/agent on the box and powered it down. Reinserted it into the stack and booted, switch came online in the stack without furhter issues...

To replace the broken base switch: the switch directly below the base unit becomes "temp base", and keeps that way until the unit/stack reboots.. If you replace the base unit under AAUR/AUR it receives the original configuration, but will not become base again until the temporary base unit is rebooted (even if the base unit select switch is "on"). I did this once and it worked, but I recommend taking a good backup in case Murphy decides to drop in..

Good luck...
Kind regards,
