Hi Will and welcome to the forums!

So long as you have the hardware you should be able to use any of the more popular Linux distributions to partition and format the IDE flash drive. If you're looking to use it in a Motorola/Symbol switch then a format probably won't really work for you. Also of importance it what version of software the Motorola/Symbol wireless switch running.

I running Ver 3.0.2.-008R but  when I try to upgrade the firmware to the lastes version a error message shows up

I tried to do thru the console and get read only message there is something thet I can do before to dent to Motorola?
