No DHCP client lease, plus dell cant find wireless
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:00:46 PM »
So I have moved my network from one building to another, the setup is the same minus the DHCP scope.  When I go into the serial of the 5100-06 unit, cli > cfg > ethernet > ethernet 2 > and I try to set the DHCP to enable to automatically obtain a lease from the DHCP server, it says that it becomes enabled, however the IP, gateway, etc remains at 0.0.0.0. Any idea how to fix this?  Also I have a Dell Latitude D620 that cannot find the wireless network, however all the other laptops in the network can find the wireless network.  Any ideas on that as well?

Thanks

I would start by examining the (debug) logs from your DHCP server. If those are not available you'll probably need to grab a packet capture of the Ethernet 2 port to see if it's really making a DHCP request and/or if it's getting a DHCP answer. You need to start by eliminating some of the elements in the problem... is the issue with the DHCP server? is the DHCP server even receiving the request? etc.

Why would you want to make the wireless switch IP address DHCP? I don't think I've ever heard of that before... you should consider using a statically assigned IP address. DHCP is great to get the configuration started and get it connected to the network but moving it into production with a DHCP address probably isn't a great idea.

With respect to your Dell Latitude D620, are you using the Windows Zero Wireless Configuration tool or are you relying on the wireless utility from Dell? You might start by just creating the ESSID/WLAN within Windows with the appropriate security settings and see if it connects. I've seen a lot of wireless devices that for some reason or another don't "see" the ESSID/WLAN but if you go ahead and configure them they will usually connect properly. You might also want to clear our any leftover ESSID/WLANs configured within Windows, I've seen that create problems on a Windows Vista laptop. Again, lots to troubleshoot in that problem.. driver version... 802.11a/b/g.. etc.

Good Luck!

As far as I can tell, the driver is pretty much up to date, it is only a few days difference between the latest driver for wireless, I have checked both the built in windows wireless connection as well as the dell wlan card utility and they both dont show the network.

Ideas?
