AP300 adoption
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:45:54 AM »
Hi,

I am currently installing two new RFS7000 controllers to replace existing WS5100 and WS5000.  The RFS7000 is running Software 5.2.1.0-21R.

I am finding that I can adopt newer AP300 single radio APs:

PN: WSAP-5100-050-WWR
MFD: 25/05/11

But I cannot adopt our older dual radio APs:

PN: WSAP-5100-100-WW
MFD: 22/11/05

Are there any known compatability issues?  I know when WiNG 5 first came out the AP300 wasn't supported but they added support in a later release.

Thanks

Chris Macleod

Hi Chris,

How are you trying to adopt the APs?  Over a Layer 2 network/VLAN or via Layer 3 connection where the AP gets an IP address?

If you are trying to adopt them over a Layer 3 connection you may need to "prime" (upgrade) the AP300 to the latest software version. Early versions of the AP300 didn't support Layer 3 connections so they need to be upgraded before they can be deployed.

You "prime" (upgrade) the AP300 by just connecting it via a Layer 2 connection (same VLAN as the wireless switch).

Thanks for your reply Michael.

It is a L2 adoption I was attempting.

I have ended up downgrading the controller to WiNG 4 and I am now able to adopt all my AP300.

I found the following in the 5.21 system guide:

Quote
Begining with WiNG 5.2 adoption of AP300 Access Points are supported in a limited capacity. The following is a list of AP300 and WiNg 5.2 features and functionality that are not supported on AP300 in WiNG 5.2:

 Self Healing

 Enhanced Beacon and Probe Table

Adoption and upgrade of pre-WiOS AP300 devices

 Layer 3 Mobility

 WLAN bandwidth allocation

 802.11k

 Smart-RF

 RF Domain Support

Could my old 2005 AP300 be "pre-WiOS?  Do you know what WiOS is?

Thanks

Chris

It's my understanding that not every feature (from the WiNG 4.x) is supported on the AP300. I have not heard of any distinction though when talking about the AP300 itself. I will ask a Motorola sales engineer to comment on this thread.

Cheers!
